Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1864. Paperback. 8vo. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Cover a tad soiled and age toned, else clean and attractive. Text of Naglee's September 27, 1864 letter to William D. Kelley. Pages 5-8 consist of "Second Chapter from the Secret History of the War," Naglee's October 6, 1864 letter to Kelley. Not in Monaghan, but just as cryptic bibliographically and clearly a variant of some sort. (Interestingly, Monaghan mentions "A Chapter from the Secret History of the War" and "First Chapter from the Secret History of the War" as variant titles -- but never any "Second Chapter.") Unusual. DORNBUSCH 51720 note (where a publication year of 1862 is mistakenly hazarded).

New York: Frederic A. Brady, 1864. 312,[2]pp. Original gilt cloth. Frontis. Small nick at crown of spine, front free endsheet excised, bookseller's description mounted to pastedown, a bit of minor foxing and some faint spotting to the fore-edge; otherwise, a very good, bright copy. Very short closed tear at right margin; small piece of tape on reverse. Uncommon Civil War map showing the Battle of Port Royal. Publisher unknown, but probably contemporary. The Battle of Port Royal was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the American Civil War, in which a United States Navy fleet and United States Army expeditionary force captured Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, on November 7, 1861. The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.

Description:
New York: Frederic A. Brady, Publisher, 1864. Hardcover. 312p., frontis cartoon (man writing at desk), preface, publisher's note, peculiar bookplate on pastedown, faint dampstain throughout with a touch of foxing, first edition in blind-pressed and gilt-decorated gray cloth boards, a poor copy: pervasive dust-soil, the gilt titlings and cover vignette but a memory, heavy wear to edges, corners, head and tail of spine, external fading and light staining &c within as noted. On a less disapproving note, the hinges are sound and handleable. Humorous writings related to Abraham Lincoln and the efforts of the North against the South. A measure how inrigued Americans were with their amazingly quotable president; most of the sketches here, presented as anecdotes and "verbatim" dialogue are made-up stuff, but in the spirit.
