About This Item

Helsinki: Fraser & Merrick Pictures, 1947. No Binding. Fine. A Finnish "tour" movie poster for the 1945 exploitation movie, THE WHITE GORILLA, starring Ray Corrigan. The film opened in Finland in December 1946 and had a very limited run which dates this poster to circa 1946/7. Possibly one of the worst movies ever made but its awfulness and subject matter has naturally stimulated a cult following. The rarity of authentic promotional material merely adds to this poster's desirability. You are looking at a "tour" poster printed for distribution to the small regional cinemas and other venues (e.g. clubs, village halls etc) outside of the main cities following a film's initial theatrical run. Finnish tour posters are re-sized printings of the normal A2 lobby poster, usually slightly narrower and longer with printed margins at top or bottom (sometimes both) with spacing for information about location, times, ticket prices etc. They were intended for circulation around the area where a screening was due to take place and were therefore posted at bus stops and on telegraph poles as well in shop windows or on community noticeboards etc. They are actually much rarer than cinema-lobby posters because they were a million times more likely to be trashed after use so when they occasionally turn up they are likely to be unused examples. Often, e.g. they are unfolded - simply because they were not distributed and it appears that there was no expectation that they would be returned to the studio/distributor like normal first-release lobby/billboard posters. This is a particularly early example of the Finnish tour poster - in fact, it is the earliest example we have handled. Measures 17" by 24" approx. Wholly illustrated but no artist signature. No printer information. Condition: C8/9 - Very Fine/near Mint. In excellent, clean condition, without folding creases. The very minor flaws with this poster are that: 1. From the right edge there are some short crease lines from which the background colour has faded 2. There are a few small white "spots" on the poster where the colour has not distributed evenly in the printing process - in other words a printing flaw and not a wear and tear issue. Otherwise, pretty flawless and a fantastic vintage movie poster, approx 75 years old. While we describe all noticeable faults in our posters for best appreciation of condition please examine the high-resolution image which accompanies the listing.
