London: Effingham Wilson & Charles Tilt, 1842. First edition. Hardcover. Important illustrated architectural work credited with helping to launch the Gothic Revival style of architecture in Great Britain. Robert Garland made the sketches for this work while the historical text was produced by Thomas Moule. Henry Winkles is given credit for the works on the title page. Winkles (1801 - 1860) was an English architectural illustrator, printer and engraver, who while very influential in Britain also founded the first steel engraving studio in Karlsruhe, Germany along with Karl Ludwig Frommel.
The volumes are illustrated with ground plans and wonderful engraved views.
Vol 1: xx, 144pp, Frontispiece & 60 full page plates. It includes Salisbury, Canterbury, York, St. Paul's, Wells, Rochester, and Winchester cathedrals.
Vol 2: viii, 140pp, Frontispiece & 60 plates. It includes Lincoln, Chichester, Ely, Peterborough, Norwich, Exeter, Bristol, and Oxford cathedrals.
Vol 3: xvi, 160pp, Frontispiece & 60 plates. Includes Lichfield, Gloucester, Hereford, Worcester, Durham, Carlisle, Chester, Ripon, St. David's, Llandaff, St. Asaph's and Bangor cathedrals.
3-volume quarto set (complete). 4to. Each plate with tissue guard; all volumes have added engraved half-title. Contemporary 3/4 calf binding & marble boards with 5 raised bands and gilt title on spine. Half title of Vol 3 is loose and chipped around the edges, other wise the set is in very good clean condition. OCLC: 59760066.
