New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1915. Very Good condition. Clean, square, tight, unmarked copy. No owner's name or bookplate. Joseph Conrad's preface "To introduce Maupassant to English readers…" fills 10 pages. Includes the novelette, YVETTE, and ten short stories: Mademoiselle Fifi; Two Friends; A Duel; Old Mother Savage; Miss Harriet; The Umbrella; The Piece of String; Queen Hortense; At Sea, A Sale; etc. Original blue denim cloth, with gilt-lettered spine. Mounted on the front cover is the original white-paper title label, printed in blue. This appears to be the first American edition of a work first published 1914 in the UK (London: Duckworth and Co). [Walter E. Smith reports that Conrad's essay also appeared in 1919, privately printed in an edition of 25 copies for Thomas J. Wise]. JOSEPH CONRAD, A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CATALOGUE (Walter E.
