An excellent copy of this significant work that is John Calvin's magnum opus. Considered one of the most important works to emerge from the Reformation.

Collation: [20], 749, [157] pp. Textually complete, lacking final index leaf only.

Calvin explores both "knowledge of God" and "knowledge of ourselves" with profound theological insight in four books. The first book discusses God the Father; the second God the Son; the third the Holy Spirit; the fourth the Church. Calvin began his work as a catechism in 1536 and it grew to an extensive systematic theology by 1560.

An attractive folio bound in full contemporary paneled calf. Re-backed in matching period style with raised bands and blind lines. Contains a red hand-tooled label decorated in gilt to the spine with the words "Calvin's Institutes."

Overall condition is VERY GOOD+. Some rubbing and some scratches to cover. Strong and sturdy binding with plain endpapers. Text is clean with occasional staining and browning in places. One leaf with lower marginal blank paper loss.

A very nice copy of John Calvin's most important work.

London: Thomas Harper, 1633. Thick square octavo, pp (6), 702, (66), printed in black letter. The title page is mounted and heavily restored from a much earlier time; it is age-toned and there is much staining of the surface, possibly from the glue used to repair ? The first few pages are fragile at the leading edge and lacking a few small pieces; the remaining pages are age-toned and occasionally slightly marked or stained, certainly used but overall quite sound with no tears or loss. Later calf with simple gilt decorated line, with some cracking and wear, fairly recently re-backed with a new calf spine, blind-stamped. Front and rear hinges cracked, but no weakness. The front endpaper has a tiny neat inscription dated 1917, and also the heraldic bookplate of Lady Violet Beaumont. (Medina, Mexico 594; Palau 44870 ("actualmente rarísima"); Sabin 10953) First edition. Horacio Carochi (1586-1666) was a Jesuit priest and grammarian who was born in Florence and died in Mexico. He is known for his grammar of the Classical Nahuatl language. He went to Rome where he entered the Society of Jesus. From Rome he went to the New World, arriving in New Spain (now Mexico). There he dedicated himself to the study of the indigenous languages and became proficient in Otomi and then in Nahuatl. He was a friend of the Bishop and later Viceroy of New Spain, Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, as is documented by surviving letters written by Carochi to the bishop. Carochi had an acute understanding of the Nahuatl language and was the first grammarian to understand and propose a consistent transcription of two… Read More

Description:
London: John Norton, 1611. Rare 1611 edition of Calvin's seminal work on systematic theology, regarded as one of the most influential works of Protestant theology. Quarto, bound in three quarter calf with five raised bands to the spine, elaborate architectural borders to the title page, woodcut headpieces and tailpieces. In good condition. Upper portion of title page removed. Written as an introductory textbook on the Protestant creed for those with some previous knowledge of theology, John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion was first published in Latin in 1536. The text covers theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone and Christian liberty. It vigorously attacked the teachings of those Calvin considered unorthodox, particularly Roman Catholicism. The Institution Of Christian Religion overshadowed earlier Protestant theologies and is regarded as a classic in theology on the level of Augustine's The City of God, and… Read More

This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
