About This Item
Hollywood: Malibu Productions, 1958. Draft script for the 1958 film. Copy belonging to actor Dick Miller, with his name in manuscript pencil on the front wrapper, and his manuscript pencil annotations throughout. Miller was director Roger Corman's initial pick for the title role, but disagreements between Corman and screenwriter R. Wright Campbell (who wanted the lead to go to his brother, William Campbell) led Corman to assign the part to actor Charles Bronson as a compromise.
Corman's first gangster film, a dramatization of the exploits of George "Machine Gun" Kelly, a bank robber in the 1930s. The film would prove to be a breakthrough role for Charles Bronson, and was later described by Corman as his first film to receive serious critical attention.
Noted character actor Dick Miller appeared in 14 films directed by Corman between 1955 and 1961, and would continue to work with Corman throughout his career.
Green titled wrappers. Title page present, dated January 12, 1958, noted as production No. 220, with credits for screenwriter Wright Campbell. 100 leaves, with last page of text numbered 99. Mimeograph duplication, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.
