About This Item

Braunschweig,: Verlag von Friedrich Vieweg und Soh,, 1841.. 2 parts in one volume: xii, 351, [i blank] pp. 8vo. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards, spine gilt lettered (a bit faded). ¶ First edition, second issue of von Liebig's epochal work. Cat. Printing and the Mind of Man 501: 'This .... entitled him to be regarded as the founder of modern organic and in-organic chemistry. His analyses of innumerable compounds led to syntheses in the laboratory and, for example, to the great artificial fertilizer industry. He founded bio-chemistry by his researches into the raw materials of which organisms are built'. An interesting association coy, inscribed on title: "Vertoond den 4 junij 1841 door Th.J. van....[=Theodoris Jacobus van Tricht] ter vertaling in de Nederduitsche taal aan het gemeenten bestuur van Ass... [=Assen] de Secretaris (W.J. Meinsma)'. And indeed, in 1842 the Dutch translation (by van Tricht) was published at Assen as: De werktuigde scheikunde toegepast op landbouwkunde en physiologie (very rare now). -- (Although a few letters of the inscription are cropped by the binder, this copy has ample margins. As usual with Vieweg's publications: partly foxed and/or slightly browned.)
