Issued as an annual, this particular edition is in the small format - in 1868-9 the size was increased from 12 mo to 8 vo. Contains two colour Kronheim engravings, printed no doubt using the Baxter process with zinc blocks. In addition there are several monochrome full and part page illustrations. Half leather binding in dark brown with gilt lettering to spine with marbled papers. Plain endpapers. 15x9.5 cm.. 380pp. Corners, top/tail and edges worn. Contains six colour engraved plates [including frontispiece] and many more woodcut plates and part page illustrations. Illustrations designed by T.H.Nicholson and engraved by C.W. Sheeres. All plates have tissue guards. Plain black endpapers. Includes a catalogue of other Ward Lock books. [Elizabeth Thomasina] Meade, a prolific author who published at least 280 books, primarily targeted at the girl literature market. This charming story of four siblings who embark on a journey to find their parents. The adventure presents them with a series of challenges where they must balance and judge concepts of good and evil. A tale of morals, often likened to Pilgrim's Progress. This first edition binding is very attractive - brown cloth with gilt and sky blue decoration with bevelled edges. Plain endpapers. Six [including frontispiece] full page illustration plates and very attractive head and tail pieces to each chapter. Regarded by many as his finest work this is a collection of Norwegian fairy tales / folklore re-told. Top & bottom of backstrip is bumped. Slight sunning along the bottom front cover edge leading into the backstrip where the bottom in ch or so is sunned. Fabulous illustrated front and rear end papers; neatly hand written previous owner name on ffep. Slight offset staining to endpapers, most likely due to a previous dustjacket. One text page [26] is facsimile replacement. Grubbiness and chipping to some pages. One text page has archival tape repair, one text page is creased and one text page has corner missing. Henry Mayer's illustrations are charming and the story is very entertaining. Mayer did not publish many children's books. A German, working mostly in the US, he was better known as a political cartoonist.

There are 11 full page Walter Crane illustrations [incl frontis] and each of the remaining 56 pages is highly decorated in the Arts and Crafts style with Pre-Raphaelite and Japanese influences. The standard of decoration is much more sophisticated than other children's books of the time. The wood engraving was undertaken by Edmund Evans, who had a fruitful collaboration with Crane, and also with Kate Greenaway. This book is a companion to the Baby's Opera by Crane (please note that I also have a copy of this for sale). The text includes nursery songs from France, Germany, and England and was a tremendous success with several hundred thousand copies sold at the time. Tan cloth backstrip. Condition: corners worn; top/tail of backstrip bumped. Front and rear hinges are broken, but the binding itself is still relatively firm.
