Book in very good, tight condition apart from some water stains, which have not seriously affected the book. They have also affected inside of DJ but are not visible on the outside. Dublin: James M'Glashan, 1849. All the current tips in the Victorian kitchen from when food was in season, to how to carve and how to make cheese. Light-brown covers with gilt lettering and decoration to spine and blind-stampd decoration to front board, 328pp with several woodcuts, inc frontis of maid in kitchen. Covers have general wear, 0.5cm missing at head and foot of spine, which is faded. Both hinges very weak - but holding. Ffep is missing, pp23/4 loose, very small hole in edge of frontis verso, several marks on covers, particularly rear. Neat previous owner's name on frontis verso and bookseller's sticker on front pastedown. Overall a delicate, but intact copy of a fascinating mid-Victorian social document. Ref:093621. First Edition. Dusty page edges, clean evidence of sticker removal from ffep and handwritten previous owner's name on front pastedown. Village library copy with one attractive stamp at start of first chapter, accompanied by pencilled name, dated 1912. Red covers with black lettering on spine and upper cover, both covers have black illustrations, 303pp, grey endpapers. "Pictures" in title refers to word pictures as the only illustration is frontis. Covers have modest wear and bumping to head and foot of spine, with a couple of light marks. Spine is slightly sunned. Hinges cracking, but holding well. Light foxing to dusty page edges and prelims.
