The book contains three D.H. Lawrence novelettes: "The Captain's Doll," "The Fox," and "The Ladybird." The second novelette, "The Fox," is an early lesbian-themed work, originally written by Lawrence in 1918 and expanded in 1920. It was the basis of the 1967 movie of the same title starring Sandy Dennis and Anne Heywood. The original wraps show some shelf rubbing, plus a crease on the front panel, and some spine darkening. It is probably the definitive work on two of England's most norious serial killers, John George Haigh and John Reginald Halliday Christie. Haigh liked to give his victims a bath in sulphuric acid to make them vanish, while Christie preferred planting them in the garden of his house at 10 Rillington Place. The author, incidentally, was the private secretary to Dr. Keith Simpson, the Home Office pathologist. Thus she had first-hand access to evidence as these cases developed.
