San Francisco: City Lights Books, 1958. First Edition, First Printing. A scarce and attractive first printing of Gregory Corso's "Gasoline," his second collection of poetry. Priced at 95 cents on the back cover, this collection was Number Eight in City Lights' Pocket Poet Series. According to the standard bibliography on City Lights, 1,500 copies were printed (Ralph T. Cook, City Lights Books: A Descriptive Bibliography). Corso's good friend Allen Ginsberg has written an introduction in his usual theatrical way: "But what is he saying? Who cares?! It's said!" By the late 1950s, Corso's renown as a Beat writer "was second only to Kerouac's and Ginsberg's." (Steven Belletto, The Beats: A Literary History, 2020, page 193). Good reference work on the prints of Gauguin and the Pont-Aven school of artists. Fans of author Alfred Jarry might be surprised to find that he was also a printmaker.

Hong Kong: Hanart TZ Gallery, 1995. Scarce catalogue celebrating the 70th birthday of Hong Kong artist Gaylord Chan (1925-2020). The catalogue features numerous plates of his brightly colored paintings and some photos from his life. There is also a section, "Gaylord Chan on Age, Art and Knowing When to Stop." In addition, the catalogue presents essays by San Chan (the artist's son), Hanart TZ Gallery's Tsong-zung Chang (Johnson Chang), and journalists Scarlet Cheng and Lulu Yu. Text in English and Chinese. Hanart held an exhibition of Chan's works from October 12 to November 2, 1995. Stapled to the front flap is a handwritten note from Chan dated 5-9-1998 (it appears to be a copy, not original). Laid in are copies of several magazine articles about Chan. This catalogue is scarce. Hong Kong: Hanart TZ Gallery, 1993. Scarce ephemeral piece announcing an exhibition of paintings by Hong Kong artist Gaylord Chan (1925-2020). In this series, he has switched from ordinary acrylic paints to the use of metallic paints. "In this new, sophisticated palette Chan has discovered a means of imparting a subtle shimmer and iridescence to his forms that gives them a quality of other-worldliness" (from the introduction). Six images plus the cover image. Text in English and Chinese. The Metallic Series was one of a series of special exhibitions to celebrate Hanart's 10th anniversary. Transcript of a speech by Ernst Lemmer, a German government minister, about the worsening refugee crisis. He notes that millions have fled the German Democratic Republic -- which he calls the Soviet Zone -- since 1949. He blames increasing "Sovietization" of the GDR and denies GDR assertions that West Germany is enticing people to leave. An interesting insight into West Germany's growing alarm about the tide of refugees from the GDR. The Communist regime, of course, would build the Wall less than three years later. SIGNED by Anne Waldman on the final page, her first book and one of only 100 mimeographed copies. A meditation on "my little world," written when she and fellow poet Lewis Warsh were living on St. Mark's Place in the East Village. The poem is dated December 3, 1967, but was published by their Angel Hair imprint in 1968. The book features a beautiful cover illustration by George Schneeman, who often collaborated with New York School poets.
Corinth reprinted Giant Night in 1970; that edition is readily obtainable. This true first edition, though, is scarce to the market, especially in collectible condition.
CONDITION: Pages lightly toned, some soiling to the covers, half-inch tear and some rippling to the rear cover page. A Very Good copy.
