Description:
London And Melbourne: Ward, Lock & Co, 1921 1921 New Revised Edition, Red Boards With Faded Spine, Some Staining To Front Board. Some Foxing, Gift Inscription Christmas 1921 On Ffep. Uniquely, There Are Typed Tipped In "Updates" Throughout. My Father Had A Similar Book, "1001 Things A Boy Can Do," And What Is Immediately Apparent Is The Scope And Complexity Of The Activities, Probably Intimidating To Most Adults, Let Alone To Schoolboys. The Two Items I Remember From My Father's Book Were (1) A Boutonnière Holder Made By Melting And Shaping A Glass Toothbrush Container So That It Could Be Filled With Water And Then Inserted Into A Jacket Button Hole So That The Rose/Carnation You Placed In It Would Stay Fresh All Day And (2) An Iceboat, Basically A Sailboat On Runners, Perhaps 12 Feet Long. Similarly In This Book, As The Editor Explains, The Focus Is On 'Utility, Rather Than Mere Play.' A Picture Is Painted Of A Boy Who Is 'Glad To Be Useful.'…

Description:
London UK: Oxford University Press, 1962 Very much an extremely scarce book and very much a reading copy, an ex school library book in poor condition. Hans and Peter was written and Illustrated by a fifteen year old girl as a birthday present for a young friend, it tells the story of two young boys who convert an old shed into a playhouse. Her lively illustrations have been described as 'Breuglesque' (see scans) and the theme of making a shed into a living space is very attractive to many, including your seller (see dannygregorysblog on this).Originally published in Switzerland, this is from the first English language edition issued by Oxford University Press in 1962, and so far as I have been able to determine, is the only one for sale anywhere. There are copies available to the first US edition published a year later by Harcourt Brace. Unpaginated small quarto in poor condition sans jacket with school stamps, crayon to end pages, bumped corners and damage to top and tail.

Description:
Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: Harpercollins, 1951 First "I Can Read" edition of this 1951 book. Very pretty illustrations by Mary Chalmers in black/white orange and blue. Interior pages are in very nice condition, absolutely no yellowing, crisp, clean and more or less unused. The previous owner has indicated "For my 8th Birthday December 4th" and there is what looks like a small food stain on the first blank page before the story actually starts. (I would guess that this child was able to read far beyond the level of this book. It is still a nice book). There is a bump to the bottom front board and mild light wear to surface, otherwise near new. There aren't that many of these about, and the story and pictures are charming. Not suitable for a precocious eight year old but suitable for a nostalgiac or collector of juvenile fiction!

Description:
U.S.A.: Crocodile Books, 1990 Two books from Dorothy Butler and John Hurford who are/is my absolutely favourite children's book team! Ms. Butler is an ex-schoolteacher with many children who wrote Babies Need Books and other landmark books about children and reading (Cushla and her books) and the totally wonderful Another Happy Tale about a baby who loves to frolic in the pigpen. John Hurford was a psychedelic artist in the 1960's, and has now perfected the best glaring baby study ever (see [photo, that glare is aimed at those who think babies shouldn't crawl around in pig pens!). A Happy Tale is is a near fine First U.S. Edition in near fine condition in a very good minus dj which is unclipped and shiny and newish, but has a one inch and a five inch tear. Another Happy Tale is near fine and has no dj. Also a first.
