Description:
L'viv: Druzhyna, 1938 12mo (18.5 cm), 239 pp. Publisher's printed wrappers designed by Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915 - 1985), a Ukrainian-born American painter, printmaker, graphic designer and illustrator. One of the first covers designed by Hnizdovsky (dated 1937), who in 1938 just entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Natalena Koroleva (Carmen-Alfonsa-Fernanda-Estrella-Natalena Dunin-Borkowska) was a daughter of Polish count and Spanish princess and a Ukrainian writer. This is the first edition of her best novell, "A Dream of a Shadow", set in Alexandria during the rein of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Wrappers frayed at extremities, small parts of paper missing along the spine, inside paper slightly browned.

Description:
New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2009 4to, 144 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "Until 2008 the Jaharis Lectionary was a hidden treasure: an illuminated Byzantine manuscript that was almost entirely unknown, even to scholars. Superbly preserved, it is arguably the most important Byzantine work to come to the Metropolitan Museum’s renowned collection since the 1917 gifts of J. Pierpont Morgan. It represents the apogee of Constantinopolitan craftsmanship around the year 1100. In this important study, John Lowden, a leading expert on Byzantine manuscripts, discusses his discoveries about this extraordinary manuscript within the broader context of Byzantine book illumination. He traces the book’s history from its acquisition to its production in Constantinople. By detailed analysis and comparison, the author shows how the manuscript was made for use in the patriarchal church of Hagia Sophia."

Description:
Fribourg: Office Du Livre, 1977 4to (31.5 cm), 608 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. The illuminated manuscripts at Waddesdon Manor, largely unknown and unpublished, represent only one third of the magnificent collection began by Baron James Mayer de Rothschild (d. 1868) and expanded by his son Baron Edmond (1845-1934). Many of these manuscripts are among the best products of important publishing houses and workshops of the later Middle Ages; some are valuable for their texts, and others for the richness of their illumination. The catalogue represents a re-orientation in the study of manuscripts and the descriptions are organized in a manner which emphasizes the history of the medieval book. The components of the manuscripts - technical elements, texts and their illustrations - are analyzed in the sequence in which they were produced. The commentaries which follow each description interpret the manuscripts in an attempt to introduce the less specialized reader to this too little known aspect…

London: Scholar Press, 1980 4to (27 cm), XVI, 414 pp. Publisher's cloth & dust jacket. "The output of the Edinburgh binders James and William Scott stands out in the work of eighteenth-century Scottish bookbinders. Though few William Scott bindings are known today, a substantial number of James's bindings have survived: his work was characterized by its clean break from the Scottish geometrical style of binding ornamentation towards a style aimed at the kind of people who would be patrons of Chippendale or Adam and might be expected to want to own bookbindings which would fittingly adorn their houses. Thus the history of eighteenth-century bookbinding can be seen to relate to wider concerns of aesthetics and design in the visual arts. Mr Loudon's book, the first detailed examination of the Scotts, gives detailed descriptions of all known Scott bindings and includes full-page reproductions of all but a few. It also examines in detail (and reproduces) the tools and rolls…

Waddeson Manor: The Rothschild Foundation, 2013 2 volumes 4to (31 cm), 520, [64] pp; [6] pp, PP. 521-1161. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "The outstanding collection of late 17th- and 18th-century books, together with their sumptuous bindings, built up by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the last 20 years of the 19th century, match his other extraordinary collections (covered by earlier catalogues in the series), and is among the best of its kind outside Paris. This catalogue reveals for the first time the riches of his book collection. The 790 books reflect Baron Ferdinand’s interests as a refined connoisseur and amateur historian. Not interested in first editions or rare texts, he collected instead books with a distinguished provenance, those with magnificent bindings and ones illustrated by celebrated artists. Many of these also related to his interest in the history of this period, documenting social culture, costume, travel, architecture and, in particular,…

Description:
Belknap Press, 2002 8vo (24 cm), 1200 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "Knowing Japan and the Japanese better," Louis Frederic states in the introduction to this encyclopedia, "is one of the necessities of modern life." The Japanese have a profound knowledge of every aspect and detail of Western societies. Unfortunately, we in the West cannot say the same about our knowledge of Japan. We tend to see Japan through a veil of exoticism, as a land of ancient customs and exquisite arts; or we view it as a powerful contributor to the global economy, the source of cutting-edge electronics and innovative management techniques. To go beyond these cliches, we must begin to see how apparently contradictory aspects of modern Japanese culture spring from the country's evolution through more than two millennia of history. This concise encyclopedia provides clear and accessible information on Japanese society and institutions, commerce and industry, sciences, sports, and politics,…

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1962 4to (29 cm), front., XIV, 49 pp, 32 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj little stained and frayed at extremities, a bookplate, internally fine). From the blurb: "Jean Pucelle, whose activity and work is the subject of this study, was the founder of a tradition of French, and more particularly of Parisian, miniature painting that lasted a hundred years. In spite, however, of his capital importance in the development of French Medieval Art, this is the first occasion on which Pucelle receives monographic treatment. As a result of a thorough examination of the whole oeuvre in the original, Mrs Morand has been able to draw a new picture of the decisive phase of French fourteenth-century painting and to offer what could be described as the first satisfactory solution of the highly controversial problems relating to Pucelle and his studio."

Addison Gallery of American Art & Yale University Press, 2006 4to (31.5 cm), 125 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "In 1968 artist Jennifer Bartlett (b. 1941) began painting in what would become her celebrated and trademark style - colored dots on gridded steel plates and canvas. Focusing on the single and multi-plate pieces that began in 1968 and culminated in 1976 when Bartlett sprang onto the art scene with her pivotal Rhapsody painting (The Museum of Modern Art, New York), this important book analyzes for the first time the significant role these formative and long-overlooked works played in her artistic development. Analytical and lyrical, Bartlett's early plate work reflects her transformation of the prevailing Minimalist aesthetic into something distinctly her own. With beautiful color illustrations of this body of work - -many of which have never before been published or exhibited - the book charts Bartlett's fascinating progression from mathematically…

Description:
The MIT Press, 2002 8vo (23.5 cm), XI, 483 pp. Publisher's cloth. "Founded in 1540, the Society of Jesus was viewed for centuries as an impediment to the development of modern science. The Jesuit educational system was deemed conservative and antithetical to creative thought, while the Order and its members were blamed by Galileo, Descartes, and their disciples for virtually every proceeding against the new science. No wonder a consensus emerged that little reason existed for historians to take Jesuit science seriously. Only during the past two decades have scholars begun to question this received view of the Jesuit role in the Scientific Revolution, and this book contributes significantly to that reassessment. Focusing on the institutional setting of Jesuit science, the contributors take a new and broader look at the overall intellectual environment of the Collegio Romano and other Jesuit colleges to see how Jesuit scholars taught and worked, to examine the context of the Jesuit response to…

Description:
Harvard University Press, 1987 4to (28,5 cm), 568 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. Meletij Smotryc’kyj viewed his Homilary Gospel (Jevanhelije ucytelnoje, Vievis, 1616) as a crucial requirement for the “spiritual good” of the Ruthenian (Ukrainian-Belorussian) nation. In light of the fierce debate over the Union of Brest (1596) he saw the need for an Orthodox collection of Gospel pericopes and sermons in the vernacular to supplant reliance on Polish Catholic and Protestant postils. Thus, he translated into Ruthenian a Church Slavonic collection of sermons on the Gospels, while simultaneously introducing formal revisions that allowed the work to compete more successfully with similar Polish texts. As a result, the Homilary Gospel is important as a critical polemical text from the Catholic–Orthodox debate and also as a monument of early Ukrainian literature. This volume reproduces in facsimile the original printed edition along with three different versions of the…
