Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read more

Besongne, rue Ecuyere, au Soleil Royal, 1715
Bartolommeo Cambi da Saluzz O.F.M.Recol., 1557-1617; Jean Besongne was mostly a publisher of religious works and government documents. Apparently obtaining the type set of an older printing house, he recast the earlier 1616 edition.
Duodecimo, 5.75 x 3.25 in. A12, A-Q12. This copy is fairly good condition internally. It is bound in contemporary limp parchment. The bookplate of the Maison des Oiseaux is pasted inside the front cover. A rare and difficult work to find as the subject, author remain obscure. Typeset and engravings hark back to the 17th century, suggesting that the printer did not have the… Read more

Description:
A letter dated Nov. 4th, 1874 from Anna Harte, wife of Bret Harte writing to Mr. Bliss and asking him for money. Apparently Brett Harte had provided a draft and Mr. Bliss was supposed to provide a check for the work and has yet to do so. This is a time when Harte was in severe financial distress, which later turned around for the family. A heartfelt letter. Extremely rare look at the family of Brett Harte. Letter has some separations at folds entering into text and an 'ink acid burn' affecting letters and words. Easily read and quite poignant a woman in distress while her ill husband is traveling and lecturing. Francis Bret Harte (August 25, 1836 – May 6, 1902) was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. He was born in Albany, New York, on August 25, 1836. He was named Francis Brett Hart after his great-grandfather Francis Brett. When he was young his father changed the spelling of the family name from Hart to Harte. Later, Francis preferred to… Read more
