Description:
Compiled in Newmarket: Tindall & Co. (printer), 1909. Not published. Full leather (scuffed). Good. A handwritten pedigree book, consisting of half-sheets for recording matings and other information. About 3 dozen half-sheets are filled out in various hands, in ink and pencil. The rest of the book (most of it) is blank. A primary document of early 20th-century English Thoroughbred breeding. The opening and closing pages contain notes about many horses, going into 1919. The half-sheets usually contain 5-generation pedigrees, Lowe family numbers, what the mare was bred to, the offspring's training and racing record, and many mysterious notes and numbers in blue pencil. It will take a demon researcher to decipher what was going on. According to The Thoroughbred Record on Google Book, a Christopher Christenson was racing in the US in 1921. Large and heavy; shipping/handling will be extra. Please keep this in mind when ordering.

Description:
New York: O. Judd Co, 1886. First edition of Weld text; later printing of du Hays text (1st pub. in US in 1868). Hardcover. Good (covers spotted, age worn); some marginal stains here and there); very sturdy. 142p + several wood-engraved plates of horses. No jacket (if issued). In 1868 the early Percheron importer and breeder Walter T. Walters published the first English edition of du Hays's work, which discusses the breed's history in France, its decline and improvement (often with Arab or Thoroughbred crosses), and advice to potential buyers. The horses pictured were chiefly those owned by Walters. In a new text added to this 1886 volume, Weld summarizes various early importations of Percherons into America; the plates are the same. (Feeling that Weld didn't adequately distinguish between random imports and his own systematic breeding program, Walters later reissued the du Hays text alone in a deluxe edition.) Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate. (Wells 8108).
