San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1964. First edition. One of 450 copies designed and printed by Mallette Dean. Illustrated and with twelve pages of Carries journal printed in facsimile. Publisher's quarter tan linen over patterned boards, printed paper spine label, plaind dust jacket. An excellent copy. Carrie Le Conte was the daughter of Jospeh Le Conte and accompanied him and his students on their famous trip to the Yosemite in 1878. As opposed to her father's famous memoir of this trip ('Ramblings in the High Sierra'), Carrie Le Conte's memoirs are those of Yosemite as seen through the eyes of a teenage girl. New York: Currier & Ives, [ca. 1880]. First edition of this color Currier & Ives Yosemite print. 16 x 12 inches. SOme mild marginal foxing. Glazed and in the original (?) frame. Very good. "Encouraged by gold prospectors traveling to California in 1849, the first party of tourists arrived at Yosemite in 1855. Abraham Lincoln, supported by influential Californians, signed the Yosemite Grant in 1864, setting aside Yosemite Valley as a state supervised public reserve. In 1890, Robert Underwood Johnson, the editor of Century Magazine and John Muir, explorer and conservationist, lobbied Congress to set aside the high country and watershed for Yosemite Valley as a national park, thus stopping grazing and timber production on the land. Currier & Ives present Yosemite in all its splendor, focusing on a flowing waterfall cascading down a mountain. It was scenes such as this that encouraged the idea of Manifest Destiny and inspired Easterners to travel west to view the beauty of their country." (Springfield Museum).

[Sacramento]: Published by Authority of the Legislature, 1871. Second edition, first printing (first 'pocket' edition). 133, [1] pp. Two folding maps of Yosemite. Publisher's rust cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering, chocolate endpapers. Spine gilt dulled, endpaper with old tidemark (but not into any part of text or maps), early (1873) owner's signature on front blank. A very good copy. This is the first "pocket edition" of the Whitney guide-book. The text is the same as in the 1869 edition but the volume has been reduced in size by use of thinner paper, a smaller font, compacting the lines, and eliminating the plates and text illustrations. This edition has two folded maps tipped in; both are dated 1871. One map shows the routes from the Bay area to Yosemite and the other map is of Yosemite Valley. The correct number of pages is 133 as in Farquhar - not 155 as shown in Currey and Kruska. Currey & Kruska 61; Farquhar 7d.

Lawson of Venice (CA) drove to Yosemite on their way to the Pacific Northwest, etc.

Burgess with the wish that she may sometime visit the Yosemite and take this book with her ... a kind remembrance of the Author. Jan/85." Lucy H. Yosemite Valley.

(YOSEMITE) D'ARCY, Jerome [artist]

  • Quantity available: 1
[San Francisco]: N.p., [ca. 1880]. Original oil on canvas. Sight size of 52 x 30 inches in a frame measuring 62 x 41 inches. Small chip to frame and minor expected crazing to painting but a beautiful and monumental painting of Yosemite. Jerome DÕArcy was a landscape and marine painter, in San Francisco 1857-1886 with studio at 107 Fifth St. HeÕs listed in the SF City Directory in 1886. San Jose Museum of Art and Oakland Museum have some of his works. This painting is probably earlier than 1886 as it shows is the old Mariposa Trail coming into Yosemite. This was the trail the Mariposa Battalion rode in on in 1851 and this use of this trail largely stopped in 1875 when the original Wawona Road cut through it. This painting would require an art shipper due to its size. As this is so onerous, we will pay half the shipping bill (contiguous 48 states only)

Yosemite Falls.

(YOSEMITE PHOTOGRAPH)

  • Quantity available: 1
San Francisco: Taber Photo, [ca. 1880]. Original cabinet card albumen photograph depicting Yosemite Falls in the background and with a cattle fence in the foreground. On a Taber mount with his negative number (B568) and title in the lower part of the image. The verso of the mount has his advertisement and an illustration of his studio. A very good image. Judging from the fence in the photograph the picture was probably taken in the mid-1870's. There are records of fence construction in the upper Valley in 1869 and 1876. By 1880 the park commissioners were complaining about the dilapidated look of the fences in the Valley and clearly the fence in this photo is in fine shape.
