About This Item

Lincoln: Bison Books / University of Nebraska Press. Near Fine. 1995. Softcover. 0803292341 . A softcover advance review copy of Robert Stuart's journals, which serve as a narration of a journey he made with 6 companions eastward from Astoria, Oregon. The onset of the War of 1812 spelled doom for the Pacific Fur Company's Fort Astoria, so Stuart and his companions made the attempt to cross the continent and reach Saint Louis. In so doing, Stuart inadvertently discovered what would become the Oregon Trail. Stuart's narration has been edited and annotated by Philip Ashton Rollins. Originally published in 1935 by Edward Eberstadt & Sons, this Bison Book edition with an introduction by Howard Lamar. With a daguerreotype of Stuart, a facsimile of a page of his journal, and a map showing various routes between St. Louis and Oregon. --- In wraps with wrap-around color Mort Künstler painting, "Too Late." --- An about Near Fine copy: bright and newish, but with light sunning to spine and shallow creases to corners of most leaves and back cover.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; cxxxvi, 391 pages .
