About This Item

London: John Murray, 1857. xiii and 401 pages. 7 folding maps and plans. A fine copy in full nineteenth century tan calf gilt.

Cathcart was killed in battle at Inkermann, and this book which is based largely on his official correspondence appears to have been a labour of love by his widow. He took over the conduct of the Eighth Frontier War after Earl Grey secured the dismissal of Harry Smith. His strategy consisted of building 'castles' along the top of the Waterkloof and wearing down the Xhosa by persistent close patrols of the Amatolas. This earned him the contempt of the colonials who preferred Harry Smith's more gung-ho approach. They nicknamed him 'Boots' Cathcart on account of the fine hip-length boots that he habitually wore.
