Three vols. in two. 22 x 14.5. [*4, A-Y8, **2] & [*1, B-U8, X4, b8, c2]. Double page map and 31 tinted aquatints or soft ground etchings. The plates for this work were divided between his brother, Sawrey Gilpin, an eminent painter of animals, and Samuel Alken for the landscape subjects. Gilpin considered trees first as "single objects" and then as elements of a clump or forest in a picturesque landscape. ABBEY SCENERY 149. (second edition only). HENREY Vol.II, p.531. "The work is divided into three `books', two composing the first volume and the third the second volume. RENWICK, pp.100-102, discusses in detail the importance of this book to Jane Austen.
