Cetinje Octoechos Октоих Цетињски Incunabula Leaf

by Hieromonk Makarije

Leaf no.101 of the Cetinje Octoechos.

It is the first incunabulum written in the Serbian recension of Church Slavonic, as well as the first book printed in Cyrillic in Southeast Europe. The Ochtoechos was the first Orthodox Christian incunabula printed albeit three years after the first mobile printing (Fiol Octoechos 1491), significantly earlier than the First Russian printed book, the Fedorov Bible 85 years later (1581).

There are about 100 known fragments of the books preserved and only three complete copies in Mt.Athos, Central Library of Serbia in Belgrade and Matica Srpska in Novi Sad. In the quality of its print and decoration it is considered to be at the same level as Venetian production at that time.

An extremely rare find, no copies nor leaves of the books ever appeared on auctions.

Printing in black with red initials, 30 lines.
Leaf number 101., pagination not present, leaf numeration established according to the photoreprint published by CNCBCG "Djurdje Crnojevic", Cetinje 1987.

Sections of the leaf missing, renewed in late 20c.

Size: 26,5 x 18 cm.

John Clérée dominican friar, preacher of the Late Middle Ages, is a little and unjustly forgotten nowadays. He was however very well known in the time of the kings Charles VIII and Louis XII, whose he has been the confessor. This study is based on the Quadragesimale said of Valenciennes. Clérée, using always of the rules of the scolastic Ars Praedicamdi, is nevertheless able to innovate by introducing in his sermons some dramatic dialogues. He is an accurate witness of the difficulties and problems of the french society about 1500 : the increasing inegalities between rich and poor ; the heaviness of the royal fiscality and of all kinds of taxes ; the… Read More

Venetiis, Johannes et Gregorius de Gregorii de Forlivio, February 16, 1492. First Incunabula Edition. Antonius de Vercelli was, for approximately thirty years, one of the leading and most influential political counsellors of the pre-eminent families in Italy's early Renaissance: the Medici family in Florence and the Sforza family in Milan. This collection of his Sermones (Discourses) has significant importance and the added weight of someone deeply involved in the political turmoil of the late 15th century. The context and political value of these discourses helped Machiavelli define "The Art of the State." Vercelli is also a significant religious figure, having had much influence in Italian theologies. 18th century… Read More
