Lights of Two Centuries by Hale, Edward Everett - 1887

Taiwan: Tunghai University, 1963. Pages clean, unmarked, binding tight. Covers mostly clean [just a little soiling at back cover only], extremities and covers with only a little wear, edges lightly browning. PO's name penned on title page. The other stories are: Brother's Valley and A City Which Could Not Be Taken. During a sabbatical leave from McPherson College Kansas in 1962-63, the author, an anthropologist, served as a Fulbright Lecturer in Formosa and in Pakistan. While in Formosa he lectured at two universities, did research among the mountain aborigines, and wrote the book, "Wu Feng, Companion of Headhunters". Bliss, 1856. 8vo., 5" x 7 1/2," frontis+vi+300 p.+4 p. ads. Bound in elaborately embossed tan leather with deeply embossed three inch circular panels on front and rear covers. Panels have dark green background with gilt florals around the edge and stylized T.S.Arthur gilt design in center. Gilt spine letterring and all edge gilting. Some abrasion to rear cover, scorching areas to rear cover and spine, outer hinge splits to front and rear covers, but binding tight and sound. Mild foxing throughout, but pages bright white and clean, uniform sweat stain running 1/2" along the bottom margin, front end paper chipped at the corners with 1857 inscription in ink. Good.. 1st. Pages 379 - 528 for the subsequent issues are not present. Frontis, title page, preface, table of contents and embellishments are missing (pp.1 -8), as is the plate of The Old Billop House on p.106. (P. 105 was blank, being the verso of plate.) Profusely illustrated with many full page engravings - approximately 85 are present among the nine issues. Toronto: Ryerson Press, 1963 Undated Apparent First Edition Of This Scarce 1963 Collection Of Hugh Garner's Short Stories Which Won The Governor General's Award, Ranked By Some As The Best Ever Written. Some Of These Stories Were Read On Cbc Radio On 'Stories With John Drainie." Garner Immigrated From Yorkshire With His Family As A Child. In The 1930'S He Rode The Rails Before Volunteering In The Spanish Civil War. He Apparently Had A Falling Out With Jack Mcclelland And Switched Publishers To Ryerson, Who Were The Publishers Of This Collection. Very Good Butter Yellow Boards With Black Stamped Titles, No Writing Or Marks, Clean And Square. Dust Jacket Is Unclipped But Quite Tattered.
