2 volumes: xxiii+537 pages with facsimile title page from the first edition; xii+[538]-972 pages with bibliography, glossary and index. Errata laid in. Inscribed by the editor, Maria del Carmen Anzueres y Bolanos to George M Foster. La Historia de la Medicina en Mexico, Coleccion Nuestros Clasicos number 2. Limited to 1000 copies. 1st edition thus.

Juan de Esteyneffer (March 4, 1664 – 1716) was a Moravian German lay Jesuit missionary sent to the New World. He is known for his 1711 work Florilegio Medicinal, which compiled a combination of New World traditional medicine, European materia medica, and 18th-century European medical diagnosis. Esteyneffer was born in Iglau, Moravia. His original German name is unclear; Juan de Esteyneffer was its rendering in Spanish, and the last name is also variously given as Steinhöfer, Steinheffer, Steinhofer, Steineffer, or Estainefer. He joined the Jesuits on September 27, 1686, and studied pharmacy in Brno. He was sent to the Jesuit College at Chihuahua to help care for elderly and ill missionaries. While there, he compiled the Florilegio Medicinal, completing it in 1711, with a first publication in 1712. It was reprinted in Amsterdam (1719), Madrid (1729) again in Madrid (1755), Mexico (1887) and this edition (1978). The work combined traditional European and New World medical lore with what was then modern medical science, and anthropologist Margarita Artschwager Kay notes that it served to standardize herbal therapy in Northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States.

George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.

Condition:

Foster's underlining and occasional note through out, light edge wear, some corners creased, inscribed on front end paper volume one, spines sunned else a very good set.

iv+294 pages. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") bound in half green cloth with marbled boards. Introduction by Aurelio M Espinosa. From the library of George M Foster. First edition. Paul Radin (1883-1959) is a widely read American cultural anthropologist and folklorist of the early twentieth century. Born the son of a rabbi in the cosmopolitan Polish city of Lodz, he became a student of Franz Boas at Columbia, where he counted Edward Sapir and Robert Lowie among his classmates. He engaged in years of productive fieldwork among the Winnebago (Hoc¹k) Indians, primarily from 1908-1912, culminating in 1923 with the publication of his magnum opus, The Winnebago Tribe. In 1929, as a result of his fieldwork, he was able to publish a grammar of the nearly extinct language of the Wappo people of the San Francisco Bay area. Late in his career he edited several anthologies of folk tales from different continents. His most enduring publication to date is The Trickster (1956), which includes essays by the pioneering… Read More

Translated from Nahuatl by Primo Feliciano Velazquez. From the library of George M Foster. Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia (INAH), First series, number 1. 3d edition. One of the great documents of colonial Mexico, the Codex Chimalpopoca chronicles the rise of Aztec civilization and preserves the mythology on which it was based. Its two complementary texts, Anales of Cuauhtitlan and Legend of the Suns, record the pre-Cortesian history of the Valley of Mexico together with firsthand versions of that region's myths. Of particular interest are the stories of the hero-god Quetzalcoatl, for which the Chimalpopoca is the premier source. Two previous editions of the Annals have appeared. 342+ix with fold out map. Folio (13" x 8 1/4") issued in original wrappers. First edition. There is an abundance of documentation concerning the history of indigenous populations of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. These documents were constructed from information about the groups with whom the Spaniards had the most contact and focus on the life and governance of these groups. In comparison, relatively little is known of the hunters and gatherers that for most of the colonial period occupied a marginal position relative to the central political scheme. These peoples, located in the arid part of America, were relegated to colonization by religious missionary orders. The Spanish colonization machine with its array of bureaucrats and administrators was first established in the Mesoamerican region because of its geo-political importance as a central area for decision-making and development of the colonial society. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") volume one rebound in red leather with gilt lettering to spine; volume two original quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. First editions. The first Mexican linguist worthy of this name is Francisco Pimentel, in the second half of the nineteenth century. He attempted to systematize what was known until then about the Indian languages of Mexico. His work is the starting-point for the development of a more scientific approach to linguistic studies on Mesoamerican languages. A scholar versed in European typology and comparative linguistic studies of the nineteenth century Pimentel is clearly indebted to his predecessor the Spaniard Lorenzo Hervas y Panduro, as well as Wilhelm von Humboldt, Friedrich Schlegel, Ernest Renan, Jacob Grimm and others. His work on linguistic classification in Mexico, unlike that of Orozco y Berra, was as up to date as that of any of his North American contemporaries. The second… Read More

Seldom has any people fought harder for the preservation of their territory and their way of life. We know them today as the Apache, an ancient people who, in historic times, made a prolonged and desperate effort to drive the Spanish, the Mexicans and finally the Anglo-Americans out of their ancestral lands. Unsuccessful, they were placed in four reservations, on or near their original ranges in Arizona and New Mexico, some of the most ruggedly beautiful land in this country.
