Folio handsome 18th century gilt ruled and sprinkled calf with 6 raised bands, the compartments & bands gilt but without a title on the spine (small chip out of head of spine/edges sl.rubbed). All edges sprinkled with red dye [8]pp prelims + 320pp + [28]pp index, publisher's imprint and large Wechel printer's mark. Some marginal damp marks to top corner but not affecting the strength and crispness of the paper nor the text. Name Fletcher to top of titlepage. A very few notes or marks to margin. *History of Louis XI & Charles VIII by de Commynes, shortened history of memorable events by Froissart and a further work, by de Seissel. Paris:: Francois Fournier,, 1719. First Edition. Very Good++. A Very Good++ hardback First edition in modern blue morocco leather with six compartments spine. Spine with black leather labels, gilt lettering rules. Vignettes title page and page 3. French and Latin texts in parallel columns. Scattered mild foxing, two pages prior dampstain. The current volume is Sm. 4to. and complete at 110 pages. Other copies have 112 pages. Comparing our copy to that available online (Bayerische Library Munich, Google Book) shows that when the French text (the left column) in our edition is longer than the corresponding Latin text paragraph, in many instances it crossed the centerline of the page and extends to the Latin side. In the copy with 112 pages this has been corrected so that when the French text is longer, it extends further on the left column lengthening the number of lines. We found no difference in text itself. This accounts for the two added pages in some copies (112 vs. our 110). It is likely that our copy is an earlier state that was corrected for aesthetic reasons and lengthened to 112 pages.

Famed full-color frontispiece is intact, as is tipped-in protective tissue. All eight B&W engravings are intact, including frontispiece. (Plate on page 97 has a deckled bottom edge.)Spine is discolored and darker than rest of jacket, with slight wear on heel and top. Pages are age tanned and have small stains. Two of the pages are uncut.All four endpapers are significantly discolored with a black waxy substance (see photos), something like crayon.
