London: Printed for the Author; and sold by L. Hawes…[et al.], 1764 First edition. Recent tan calf over marbled boards, Gilt-ruled spine with crimson morocco label. . Quarto. Five engraved folding plates. With list of subscribers. A little light foxing. A very good copy of a scarce book. John Landen (1719-1790) was the most notable British mathematician in the second half of the eighteenth century. At the time when British mathematics was held back by inadequate notation, an unfortunate consequence of the Newton-Leibniz dispute, he was the only Englishman to score major advances in mathematics and in the art of computation. In this, his most important work, he attempted to replace the fluxional calculus with an analytic method "founded entirely on the anciently received principles of algebra." A second volume was planned, but it never appeared. According to Lacroix, this was the first attempt to reduce the infinitesimal calculus to "purely mathematical notions" (Oxford DNB). Landen's writings… Read More

Description:
1st Edition. FIRST EDITIONS IN MINT CONDITION AND IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Abraham Wald's seminal work on sequential tests of statistical hypotheses. Before Wald, the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis, make a predetermined number of measurements, then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful, and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. "According to Wald, the resulting ‘sequential probability ratio test frequently results in a savings of about 50 percent in the number of observations over the most efficient test procedure based on a fixed number of observations" (Gass, An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research, 65). In these papers Wald, known now as "the father of sequential analysis and decision theory," first presents the theoretical foundations of the theory of sequential analysis. The ideas he… Read More

1684 Japanese Mathematics Yoshinori Abacus Math Illustrated Magic Squares Kyoto

A rare, 17th century Japanese woodblock print of "Sanpouketsugishou" written by Isomura Yoshinori, a mathematician. Isomura was called 'the master of the abacus' because he solved problems that would otherwise not be possible without using algebra, and the abacus features in many illustrations as does his interest in 'magic squares, magic circles and magic wheels.' This book contains solutions to 12 problems published in an earlier work and provides 150 more.

This rare edition is written in the typical handwritten column format bound in the "fukurotoji" style (Keio) complete with illustrations of mathematic problems, shapes, diagrams, and people and animals using an abacus throughout!

1659 1ed George Fox FAMOUS Primer for Scholars Mathematics Quaker Philosophy

George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, was known for his missionary travels and journal writings describing his life and ministry. However, he wrote an interesting primer which, on the surface, was intended for 'scholars and doctors'. Though, this work "Primer for the Schollers and Doctors of Europe", has often been considered one of the best children's books in England, according to Harvey Darton. This book offers elementary descriptions of subjects such as grammar, music, arithmetic, ethics, theology, and medicine.

The first edition of a book by the German mathematician Felix Hausdorff (1868-1942) presents his research on the theory of sets, focusing particularly on the development of a formal axiomatic system for set theory. Hausdorff's work on set theory was significant in shaping modern mathematics and establishing its foundations. In the book, he delves into properties of sets, the nature of set operations, and the importance of axiomatic systems in comprehending these phenomena. Furthermore, Hausdorff introduces the concept of cardinality, which serves as a measure of the size of sets.
