Presentation book plate front paste down -"Presented to the Physio-Medical College of Indiana By Melville C. Keith, M.D. Christmas 1888". Errata slip tipped in at final page of text. Edwin Hartley Pratt was the founder of the Chicago-based Orificial Surgery Society in 1887. Orificial surgery sought to cure many of the physical and psychological ills of the body by surgical corrections to the various orifices, mainly those below the waist. This movement in mainstream American medicine flourished until the 1920s, and the numbers of those subjected to orificial surgery during its brief heyday are estimated to be in the tens of thousands. It is remembered mainly today for its advocacy of circumcision in both males and females. RARE in the 1887 First Edition, a wonderful curiosity for any medical book collection !. First Edition. Description:
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1929. Hardcover. 4to, Original blue buckram. xxxv, 785pp. Very good. Some faint pencil underlining shadows in the opening text pages; rear inner hinge a tad delicate, but sound. First edition, tight and nice, of this famed bibliography. Editors W.W. Francis, R.H. Hill and Archibald Mallach open this classic, explaining this collection and their method in approaching it, after which in his introduction, "The Collecting of a Library," Osler relates the history of his collection. 7,787 items are described -- an essential reference and scarce in first edition form. This copy bears the handsome custom bookplate on the front pastedown and ownership signature (dated "Chicago / 1930") of ELMER A. SMITH, a noted Chicago attorney and Illinois Central Railroad solicitor general who presented two papers about Osler, one titled "Sir William Osler as seen by a layman." Lovely copy of this quite uncommon work and bearing an appropriate connection.

"In this book, real life photos are used to help young people feel more comfortable with interacting with other children and making new friends. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of… Read More
