The dedication references the girl Pili, the author's wife, and Spain, for which he had a long-standing fascination. Prior to his 2011 appointment as Poet Laureate of the United States, Philip Levine won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, the National Book Award, the Ruth Lily Prize in Poetry and the Wallace Stevens Award. Binding is sharp with no bumping to corners. Book sits solid and square. Housed in the distinctive pictorial wraparound dustwrapper with publishers printed price intact on front inside flap. Dustwrapper is in excellent condition with no fading and vibrant colour tone and is considered fine. Protected in a removable, archival booksleeve to preserve its condition. John Major, London.,1824. SECOND MAJOR EDITION. Illustrated with 14 copper engraved plates and several woodcuts throughout the text. Two small patches of browning affecting the top outer corner of ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy in fine nineteenth century binding by Thomson of Exeter, with binders ticket on front paste down. Full tan calf, raised bands, compartments fully gilt. Red title label, gilt. Boards with double blind ruled and one gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. School prize plate on front paste down shows that this copy was given as a prize in January 1842. Previous owners name(dated 1881) and ink name stamp on blank endpapers. Front hinge neatly repaired. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in an attractive nineteenth century binding.:

All three volumes are generally clean and tidy throughout but have been re-cased into their original publishers bindings and new blank endpapers have been added. Original red cloth with black lettering to the fonr boards and spines. All three spines are faded but the black lettering is still strong. A few spots and marks to the cloth. Housed in a recent cloth covered slip-case. :

A rare, early 20th-century printing of two famous Italian novels translated into English by William G. Waters. Printed by the Society of Bibliophiles in London, this seven volume set features "The Facetious Nights of Straparola" by Giovanni Francesco Straparola and 'Il Pecorone' by Giovanni Fiorentino. Both of these works are notable for being written in the style of the famed work 'Decameron' by Giovanni Boccaccio.
