About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1956. 1st Edition. Hardcover. A small number of the first edition sets were produced bearing the words "PRESENTATION EDITION. NOT FOR SALE." on the copyright page of each volume. In all other respects such copies are identical to normal first editions, including the $6.00 price on the dust jacket flap. Such presentation copies are quite scarce. (See Langworth p.319 for further details.) Here is Volume Two only.

Condition is near-fine+ in a very good correct first printing dust jacket. The binding is clean, tight, and square with bright gilt and virtually no wear. The contents are pristine - crisp and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership markings. The book appears clearly unread. Even the untrimmed text block fore edge is bright and clean. Only very slight speckling of the unfaded red-stained top edge prevents this copy from being truly fine. The dust jacket unclipped, clean, and complete with no losses or tears. It suffers from the usual sunning to the red subtitle block at the center of the spine, which is faded to light pink with the subtitle unreadable. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
