Riots in Amsterdam during the public execution of the two instigators of the so-called 'Pachtersoproer' (Tenants revolt). - Smit, Jan. (Engraver). Kort verhaal van het voorgevallene den 28. Juny 1748 op den Dam te Amsterdam, dienende te gelyk tot ene uitlegging van de onderstaande plaat. Amsterdam, Steven van Esveldt, 1748. Large folio, ca. 52 x 42 cm; image size: ca. 36 x 37 cm, an etching by J. Smit ('del. et fecit'), captioned with a title, the publisher's adress and an extensive explanatory text printed in 2 columns underneath.
Fine and rare print with a large engraving by the artist and engraver Jan Smit (1726-1807), depicting the riot at the Amsterdam Dam during the public execution of the two instigators of the so-called 'Pachtersoproer' (Tenants revolt) on 25 June 1748. The Tenants revolt of 1748 was a rebellion in several Dutch cities. The uprisings were not only directed against the high taxes and prices, but also against the situation that public offices were sold by the state to the highest bidder. It is seen as one of the precursors of the Batavian revolution. - Very good copy.

John Theobald's "Medulla Medicinae Universae" is a rare 18th-century dispensatory. Throughout the War of Austrian Succession, there was a growing need for care for the sick and wounded. Theobald wrote this book for British soldiers in Flanders during the war. This particular 1761 edition was collected and edited by John Pringle who included some of the original recipes for medicines used during the war, including treatment of women and children. Curiously, this book also contains the cure for gonorrhea which was commonly contracted while in military hospitals.
