[2] + pp. [291] - 345 + [1] blank. 8vo., sewn printed wrappers, paper spine, front cover bearing title and publication data, inside front cover being an advertisement for the pamphlet and announcing the publication elsewhere of the new edition of Malthus' Principles of Political Economy. The rear cover is blank. There is minor creasing to the bottom corner, and there is occasional neat graphite pencil underlining and margin markings/notes, on only a few pages. Very good overall. All five of Say's letters are included; the translator is not named, but is likely John Richter. See Kress C776 for the (subsequent?) book version, published the same year. Rare.

Quarto, contemporary tree calf, edges worn, rebacked, red morocco label, (2) + ccxxxvipp + 496pp, including the dedication to the Duke of Buccleuch, engraved frontispiece, folding engraved map.

Second edition, but the first to contain this critical attack on Adam Smith’s laissez-faire doctrines to the East India Trade in the Wealth of Nations. The long criticism appears on pages clxi-clxxxvi and begins; "Of the example of Portugese Asia cannot be better enforced by an examination of the popular arguments relative to the British commerce with India. A recent Writer on the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, has stood forth as the philosophical champion for the abolition of the Monopoly of the English United East India Company…"

Bookplate of the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College on front fixed endpaper indicating that this was given to the college in 1891 by G. E. Mills, chair of the Book Committee. Embossed Dickinson College Library stamp on title page. Mary Paley Marshall (1850-1944) was part of the first class (of 5 women) at Cambridge's Newnham College in 1871. She taught economics at Newnham and was asked to write a book based on her lectures. Her husband, Alfred Marshall, also contributed to The Economics of Industry before publication. It was popular and reprinted many times. When his larger work The Principles of Economy first appeared in 1890, he opposed any further printings of The Economics of Industry, indicating that this was presumably the final printing. In 6 volumes, covering 1793-1856; vol. 1 published 1838, vol. 6 published 1857. Very Good: no cracks or tears, slight abrasions on spine of volume four.Tooke's groundbreaking analysis of the financial and commercial history of the period, concentrating on the principles of pricing, monetary circulation, issuance and valuation/devaluation of currency, the effects and principles of bank-issued currency, the effects of weather, war, monopoly, transportation and colonialism upon the mechanisms of pricing.
