1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. 1806 London fourth edition. Hardcover, modern fine binding. Condition is a mixed bag. Volume has been repaired and conserved. Modern quarter leather with marbled boards with text block resewn. Complete with all text pages, new blanks. Old water injury evident in about 75% of pages with worst injury at front and back pages. Last leaf repaired at bottom corner causing loss of a few words on p. 251/52 (see image). Some old ink stains along edges that do not extend to the interior. Old pencil mark on p.87, no other writing. Paginates: xix, 252. Subject matter is the English habit of search and seizure of American vessels and sailors which led to the War of 1812. Howes S946. Notes: First published in 1805 followed by 'new' editions every few months until fifth and final edition of 1807. The second edition (also 1805) adds a new preface and an appendix. The subsequent editions each add a new preface but otherwise appear unchanged. More notes: the interior pagination is wonky but text is complete. Needs a good home.
