Sacramento, California , 1855. Two manuscript letters in ink, both on ruled paper with folding creases, the 1855 letter 8" x 12 1/2", with single spaced writing both sides, approx. 500 words. The 1856 letter 15" x 10", folded in half to make 4 pp., approx. 300 words, with small blindstamp top left corner depicting an eagle. The earlier letter is headed "September 18th 1855 Naperville Dupage County Illinois" and ends "Michael direct your letters Nevada County, Nevada post office, California". George writes to his brother Michael in Naperville that he has "seen a good dele sins i rote you they last letter", including a hundred "inshins" and some "Buffellow". He adds that "we had good luck all they way of may we left Council Bluff", and that he is not home sick yet. United States Army, 1863. One sheet of paper backed with an attached second sheet, two horizontal folds, one vertical fold, fragile yet Very Good, sheets separating at folds., light age toning. Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford, a private in Company B, 64th Regiment Infantry, Indiana Volunteers, dated Sept. 30, 1863 at St. Louis, Mo, by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin, handwritten in red ink, "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. Hudson" with more writing below, illegible. Stamped in red ink "paid by Robert Smith St. Louis Oct. 2 1863 Paymaster U.S.A." " To the Sheriff of Any County, Kansas: Whereas requisition in due form has been made by the Governor of the State of Illinois of one John Randell a fugitive from justice, who stands charged with the crime of Forgery. Now Therefore, James M. Harvey (signature) Governor of the State of Kansas ....command you to apprehend, arrest and deliver said fugitive to the custody of John W. ? of the State of Illinois....". SIGNED at the bottom right, James M. Harvey and COUNTERSIGNED by the Secretary of State Thomas Moonlight. Flexible leather album, front cover stamped in gilt with title "Autographs" surrounded by gilt flourishes, spine decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. 98 pp, 19 of them blank, leaving 79 with manuscript and 78 signatures, 4 with writing in Japanese as well as English, 3 with full page calligraphic drawings of birds, with 38 photographs in the form of stamps including one oversize stamp measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" of Mrs. C.C. Gaines, wife of the President of Eastman College ( the other stamps all measure 7/8" x 1"). The rest of the stamps are males, either students or faculty. The photographic stamps were done by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie, NY. The album belonged to student Clif. J. Prosser. Very Good, the leather rubbed at edges, rear leather cover about half loosened from the board, light soiling. On Bates' personal stationery, dated Jan. 6, 1906 and headed "Hon. Knute Nelson, United States Senate, Washington, D.C. Dear Sir:- I have the honor to enclose under separate cover a copy of "The Panama Canal, System and Projects", and venture to hope that some of the matter contained therein may be of interest to you." Bates then goes on to explain the cost, scale, and completion time for his plan in the next paragraph. Tinder's "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" published by Clements Library, 2013. With tissue guards for all but 3 of the etchings, all of the etchings are Fine, No Date, circa 1933-1942. On heavy laid paper, the sheets ranging in size from 8 1/2" x 9 3/4" to 10" x 12 1/2". Los Angeles: Clifton's Pacific Seas Cafeteria, 1939. No date, circa 1940. Clifton's Cafeteria opened in the early 1930's during the height of the Great Depression, and instituted a "Pay As You Wish" policy ( seen in fine print on the card), never turning away a customer, and giving away many free meals. In 1939 it underwent a complete renovation and was transformed into a 3-story restaurant with South Pacific "Tiki" theme called Clifton's Pacific Seas. After Jack Kerouac ate there, he made mention of it in "On the Road". The restaurant closed and was demolished in 1960. The card is Very Good, small corner creases. Verso of card is blank. . Portland, OR: Hotel Hoyt RARE, (Worldcat locates 2 copies) advertising brochure for the legendary Portland Hotel Hoyt. No Date, circa 191?. Near Fine, small (1/4") tears at folds. 1 folded sheet. ([6] pages) : color illustrations with color drawing of the hotel, color photos of two of the rooms and the lobby, rates, and 4 paragraphs of description. The hotel featured 200 rooms and 100 private baths. Built in 1912, the Hoyt closed in 1972 and was demolished in 1977. After its 1962 renovation by owner Harvey Dick, its nightclub Barbary Coast Lounge and Roaring 20s Room attracted celebrities such as Johnny Carson and Duke Ellington. . One Page,Folded Twice.
