After returning to Canada, Father Sharkey worked with the administration of the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society. Courcelette and Other Poems

By Manning, James Harold

Saint John, N.B.: J. & A. McMillan, Ltd., 1925 Original brown cloth with pastedown title. Gift inscription in front. A heart-rending biographical note introduces the poetry. Manning was born and reared in Saint John, where he worked briefly in Public Works before leaving for university to study dentistry. When war broke out a year later, he entered active service, where he was injured at Vimy Ridge and invalided home. Back in the fray at Lens, he was first buried alive and then suffered the loss of his left hand, which forced him to give up dentistry. Returning to university - Acadia this time - he received his B.A. after one year. Following further study at Harvard in town-planning and landscape-gardening, he took a position in Chicago for a year, but then abruptly moved to New York City as an engineer for Standard Oil. Posted to Maracaibo and then Maturin, he contracted malaria and died in 1924, at the age of 27. Following the poems is a tragedy, "What Is Truth?". 106 pp. . Original Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Frontispiece Portrait. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Behind the Lines; A Book of Poems

By Milne, A. A.

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, Limited, 1940 Blue cloth on boards. No writing. Narrow band of foxing inside each cover. Milne is writing from his home in England, giving his impressions of the first nine months of WW II. Believing him to be serious, one begins to wonder when coming across "The Hausfrau Speaks," where the first line mimics the accents of "Drink to me only with thine eyes" with the words "Read to me only from thine Kampf, and I will read from Mein." The last two poems, "The Objector," and " The Lost Generation" make clear where Milne stands. 124 pp.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good Plus/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
