By Baedeker, Karl

Karl Baedeker. Leipzig. George Allen & Unwin. London. Chas. Scribner's Sons. New York. 1936. Octavo. lxiv, 528pp. All maps and plans pristine, (Munchen I placed a little proud with extreme edge darkened). Rear pocket holding the road map and the Reichssportfeld Plan, both pristine. Original darker smooth variant cloth (issued in conjunction with the Berlin Olympics). A little shelf wear, bumped corners. Two small spots to upper board. Publisher's adverts to feps., map to reps. All edges marbled. Woven bookmark. The first and only English edition to describe Germany under the Nazi regime. The 1936 Olympics in Berlin provided Hitler with a showcase for his political beliefs in Aryan supremacy and nationalism. The Berlin Olympics were the first ever to be televised, and to host the torch relay. The Plan included here is uncommon, and was not included with the post-Olympics issues of this edition. "Many Jewish athletes who either competed in the Olympics prior to 1936 or the 1936 Olympics itself would die in concentration camps during the Holocaust." [Time Magazine] This edition notably includes the entry for the National Socialist Party, its structure and its leaders, its symbols and its salute, the 'Deutscher Gruss or Hitler-Gruss', "ie the raising of the right arm, accompanied by the words 'Heil Hitler' has since 1933 largely superseded the practice of hat raising… compulsory for officials and for everybody when the national anthems are played". Index of Streets and Plans of Berlin.

By Baedeker, Karl [Fitch, Clyde]

Karl Baedeker. Leipsic. 1893. 5 maps. 1pp street index. Original wraps. Two corners chipped with marginal loss. Partial split to spine. Published as an appendix to Baedeker's Northern Germany (English edition) of 1893, the interest of this lies not only in its printed content, but in the signatures and notes on the last blank. Signatures of C. Clado; J.W. Earle; Clyde Fitch; and Thomas G. Stevenson. Notes: "Moscow to Warsaw Aug. 31, 1900". "Leanfuerstenheim (?) Brussel 271 Avenue Louise"... directions to "Heilbronner Strasse 25 - II Etage" Berlin. Notes in three different hands. Clyde Fitch (1865 -1909) was the most successful Broadway dramatist of his time. "There was a radiance about him always, and the same glow dominated his circle of friendships". He had a passionate affair with Oscar Wilde. Fitch was Wilde's "Faun" in Wilde's first draft of "In the Forest". "A notorious dandy with a penchant for foreign arts and sartorial luxury" his homosexuality and transsexuality was at odds with the mores of the day, and he kept his life a secret. To this day no full biography of his life exists. Few letters remain: many lost or destroyed These brief notes and signatures offer rare documentation of a passing moment in a hidden life, at a most turbulent time for Fitch. In 1900 Clyde Fitch's play "Sapho" (created by him for Olga Nethersole) was censored in the United States for "explicit sexuality" on 22 February. Overwhelmed, Clyde Fitch sailed for Europe. "Sapho hangs about my neck". Fitch was absent for the trial, and for the rest of the summer, setting sail back to America on October 7. On April 6 Clyde Fitch and Olga Nethersole were acquitted: they never spoke to each other again, although the play continued successfully on Broadway and in London. "Then Aug. 8 I go off with a Greek-English friend to Stockholm, Copenhagen, St Petersburg and Moscow." Letter to Marguerite Merington 23 July 1900. Six references to Clado in his letters. In Clyde Fitch's last letter dated 28th August 1909, written from Chalons Sur Marne, he writes of Clado, "He knows more about more things and people than anyone I know! And he is a wonderful critic, but Oh, such a cruel one, that after a while you feel you can't bear it." Fitch died there a few days later. Penn Special Collections https://pennrare.wordpress.com/2018/05/09/the-queer-career-of-clyde-fitch/ Kevin Lane Dearinger. Clyde Fitch and the American Theatre: An Olive in the Cocktail. 2017. Montrose J. Moses and Virginia Gerson. Clyde Fitch and his letters. Boston. 1924. "Clyde Fitch's contacts were many more than these letters would indicate. That there is an absence … does not mean that such material does not exist … Some day it may be, such letters may be discovered."
