About This Item

Druid Press. Llanybri, nr. Llanstephan, Carmarthen. 1945. Octavo. 100pp, 2 pp adverts. Original paper covers, a little sun-darkened to the edges. Printed on typical war-time paper. Original staples, oxidised. A nice copy.
Significantly contains two poems by R.S. Thomas, both published here prior to the publication of his first volume of poems 'The Stones of the Field' in 1946.
The first poem, published here, and never collected, is 'Gideon Pugh' [attributed to S. R. Thomas in the volume]. "Gideon Pugh may be a minor poem, but it is a significant one" [S. J. Perry. OUP. 2013.]
The second poem published here for the first time is Thomas' 'The Rising of Glyndwr'. Published in 'The Stones of the Field' a year later, "It is at this moment that we first meet ' the matter of Wales ' fully articulated in R.S. Thomas's work ' The Rising of Glyndwr ' ". [W. Moelwyn Merchant. UWP. 1989].
Robert Graves 'The White Goddess: a Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth was published in 1948, based on his articles in WALES magazine. This volume published for the first time, 'Dog, Lapwing and Roebuck (3). It leads to an explanation of why the answer to the ingenious agrostic concealed in the Hanes Taliesin is a secret Irish bardic alphabet...
Amongst other contributions is a beautifully resonant piece of writing by Tudor Edwards - 'The Prodigal's Return'.
