The Hobbit

By Tolkien, J R R

The Hobbit tells the famous story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who is caught up in the affairs of wizards. His journey through Mirkwood and the climactic confrontation with the dragon Smaug served as the launching point for Tolkien's transformative trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Many of the essential elements of Tolkien's classic saga have their roots in this children's book.

The first impression of the first edition ran as a limited printing of 1500 copies, and authentic copies with the dust jacket will include a well known hand correction, in black ink, of a misspelling of the last name of Reverend Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) on the back flap. A first edition, first printing of the original U.K. edition can run over $40,000. Signed copies of this edition have been appraised at over $100,000 U.S. Later printings of the first edition also retain much value for collectors. The first U.S. Edition, printed in 1938 by Houghton Mifflin Company, is prized and is commonly sold to collectors at prices well over $2,000.

Chips to the cover, a missing dustcover, wear to the spine, and damage to the map in the endpaper, are some of the more common flaws for this book.

The story remains popular, and stands as one of the most enduring (and endearing) stories of the last century. The Hobbit sparked a creative explosion in speculative fiction, a fire that burns brightly to this day. The revival in interest in recent years, in part due to the popularity of the film series inspired by Tolkien's books only shows the timelessness of his story, and the importance of his work.

The Hobbit

TOLKIEN, J.R.R

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1938. First American Edition; first state (or, as Hammond speculates, possibly a printing), with the “bowing hobbit” on the title page, often erroneously described as an “issue.” Of the five thousand copies of this edition, it is not known how many of each “state” were printed or distributed, but in this cataloguer’s substantial experience, those in the second state have far outnumbered the others. A nearly fine copy in a very good dust jacket with a tiny remnant of tape at the top of the spine and an old two inch tape mend on the back panel.

The Hobbit

JRR Tolkein

This is the 1st Edition, 1st Impression, 1st State, with the bowing Hobbit on the title page. This book is one of the 3000 probably to have been printed and the rarest of the 1st US edition. The tan cloth cover is printed in blue for lettering and red for the bowing hobbit emblem on the front and the dwarf's hood emblem on the spine. Embellished with 4 colour plates and black and white illustrations throughout by the author. All of which are present and in extremely clean and bright condition. This is also the first edition to feature the 'Bilbo Wakes Up' plate. Hammond & Anderson [A3b]. The text block and maps are also very clean and bright, with a small bookplate Jervis Library on inside front cover map, and inside back cover map has a few Elvish characters missing and one strip on paper from the library pocket. Title page has small red stamped "Discarded from Jervis Library". The original cloth shows a little shelf wear on the top edge and a smudge on the back cover board. No Dustjacket.
