Genesis 1948: The First Arab-Israeli War by Kurzman Dan - 1970

OFFERING: The author's presentation to Clark Clifford, a major source on international recognition for the State of Israel. Clifford is cited on twenty five pages, including the acknowledgments for use of his diaries and files and bibliography for use of White House files on Palestine. Clifford, as special counsel to President Truman and chief of his 1948 re-election campaign was instrumental in the decision making process that resulted in President Truman granting recognition to Israel. The work, by an experienced and highly honored journalist, (George K. Polk Memorial Award, Foreign Reporting, 1965), utilizes extensive archival research and hundreds of interviews, "to tell the story of the Arab-Israeli war for the first time." [preface, p. ix]. Among published firsts is the exposition of the Battle of Qastal and Kurzman's controversial finding that no broadcast order from an Arab authority was issued to Palestinians to flee Palestine, the first fact-based refutation of the widely reported myth. CLARK CLIFFORD [1906-1998]: had an influential role in initiating the Marshall Plan and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He is also credited with drafting for President Truman the 1947 legislation that created the Defense Department and the Central Intelligence Agency. He advised the Kennedy family during the 1960 presidential campaign and headed President-elect Kennedy's transition team. After McNamara's resignation, Clifford served as President Lyndon Johnson's Secretary of Defense for the final 10 months of his administration and is credited with a principal role in laying the groundwork for the negotiations that led to the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. During the Carter administration, Clifford sought to mediate the Turkish-Greek dispute over Cyprus and advised the President on the Panama Canal treaty. In his memoirs, "Counsel to the President" (1991), co-authored with Richard Holbrooke, he speaks at length of his role in supporting diplomatic recognition for Israel. He is cited on pages xiv-xv of the acknowledgments and p. 734 of the bibliography, pp. 86-99 of Chapter Three, "Struggle in Washington", and also, p. 213, pp. 215-217, pp. 251-253, p. 574 and p. 635.
