Construction battalion detachment was the one assigned to the Solomon Islands where they performed major tasks to create a major docking facility while fighting malaria and insects. This remarkable volume has hundreds of photographs that document the 1008th which was one of the larger battalions (some on smaller islands had as few as sixty men). Laid in are papers of how the Association funds were spent on the printing, engravings, editing, and other task in producing one of the most thorough Seabee volumes (at the cost of $9,480.50 in 1946). Only two copies are found on OCLC. Also laid in is a mimeographed list of the men and where they were located in the photographs of the entire battalion. A handsome copy, near fine bound in brown and blue cloth lettered in brown and blue, Owner's (subscriber) name stamped in gilt to upper board.

The Fairmile boats with which this book is largely concerned-the A and B Cass MLs, the C Class MGBs and the D Class MTBs and MGBs formed a considerable part of the Coastal Forces organisations, and served in all theatres of the war. This book, giving details of all the boats and their armaments, also explains the organizations of their production, and sets out their service and achievements. 2 three page letters (rectos only) Both letters were kept in original mailing envelope date stamped November 23, 1944 and written from the U.S.S. Rixey. Letter I is dated Nov. 12, 1944. It is addressed presumably to his wife and daugther. He answers her that, yes he had heard Tokyo Rose about a year earlier. He says: "it seems like the Nips has the idea that they are really spreading propaganda...but it just offers a good laugh" along with a good musical program. There is "Rosie" and another who comes on before her and goes by the name "Little Orphan Annie of Tokyo". Also a man who reads news which is a lot of baloney since we are right there--I guess censor will pase this talke since it is also broadcast in the states. Letter II is addressed to his parents. Much in this unique novel by a writer who knew the sea and focuses on the quite ordinary bluejackets assigned to the battleship Nevada. As J.P. The most scarce of the Nazi propaganda books in 1933 created by the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, with text by Wilfrid Bade. Profusely illustrated with color images and numerous black-and-white photographs, printed on cards, and mounted directly onto the pages. Six panel foldout of a Nuremberg rally at rear. Virtually all recorded copies list only 151 pages. Only our copy and the one recorded at Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (Leipzig) have the extra pages. Also 65 of the photographs have color (a process for camera invented by Alga in 1932). Besides the remarkable photographs in the text of the book, there is a remarkable 6 panel photograph of the 5th Party Congress held in Nuremberg, August 30 - September 3, 1933. The story of war and Chennault-a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve who downed 37 Japanese aircraft and developed revolutionary tactics for air-to-air combat. He later formed the famous Flying Tigers. Bound in yellow paper covered boards backed in dark blue paper, spine lettering gilt, light bumping to corners, a very nice copy in clipped pictorial dust jacket with tape mends to spine ends.

Washington, DC: GPO.Morale Division, 1947. Quarto. vi, 262 pages. An important early collection as the US military studied the effects of the bombing on the morale of the Japanese. Uncovered were mimeographed letters circulated opposing the war by Japanese dissenters, The subversion work of Ito is given. A fascinating report which notes while the older workers could see through the government propaganda, their uneducated replacements from the countryside believed everything the government announced. Many photographic illustrations, charts, etc. One of the best near contemporary accounts. Bound in original blue paper wraps lettered and ruled in black, spine a bit darkened, a few small tape mends to spine. Previous owner's book plate.

Edelman had written on the hopes of democracy in Spain earlier but here he trace how fascism took over and by 1938 had solidified its control. He left for Buenos Aires to write this work in 1938. Bound in pictorial paper wraps with yapped edges (front edge trimmed) lettered and decorated in red and dark green, spine lettering green, browning to leaves, some foxing to wraps. A very good copy of this scarce work.

New York, (1954): Duell, Sloan and Pearce. First Edition. Octavo. 247 pages. The story of the only American soldier since 1864 to be shot for desertion although thousands have been tried and convicted for desertion from the Civil War to the Korean War. During the second world war alone an estimated 40,000 soldiers were tried for desertion, forty-nine were severe enough to be approved for the death sentence and were commuted but this is the one exception. It is strange that if he were being made an example of then why did the army put the case under wraps for eight years until the author of this volume brought much of it to light. It is now believed that no one in the process thought the death by firing squad would actually not be stopped but at the very last there was no one to countermand the order and hence the famous case became a study of the miscarriage of military justice. It covers the early years (1891-1914) when they served in the Boer War up until World War I. The Second World War It was redesignated the '1st batallion, 48th Highlanders and on 13 June 1940 it went to France as part of the Second British Expeditionary Force, reaching Sablé-sur-Sarthe before being ordered back. They ended up in landings in Italy, Sicily, France, Germany and after the war were station in Eastern Europe. The author of this book is George W. "Goordie" Beal who served in the 48th and was of the 3rd generation to serve.
