About This Item

London: Whittaker, 1835. xix and 283 pages. Rebound in green rexine.

Cadell served with the 28th at Copenhagen, in the Peninsula and at Waterloo, and commanded the regiment's grenadier company for the greater part of that period. His book contains one of the best British accounts of the Battle of Barossa. It is curiously reticent about Waterloo, failing to mention the loss of the silk Egyptian sphinx which was shot from the centre of the regimental colour and picked up by none other than Cadell. The fragment was returned to the regiment only after Cadell's death in 1866 (and was subsequently lost in Burma in 1942). This copy of a hard to find book has the bookplate of Patrick Cadell and a presentation inscription 'to a daughter of the Regiment from one of its distant relatives PRC'. Cadell's bookplate depicts Cockenzie House 'the childhood home of Colonel Charles Cadell'.
