Amid "excitement caused by this gold fever, and the frantic preparations made to get there, and get there quick," Fraser departed San Francisco for Skagway on the S.S. Queen in early January, 1898. "The fever was in the air. The general salutation when you met an acquaintance was, 'Are you going to the Klondike?'." Includes an anecdote about "confidence men of Seattle" -- "Seattle was Klondike crazy. More so, if possible, than San Francisco." Contains two pages on scurvy. With the rubber-stamp of "Henri Vetch, The French Bookstore," Peking. Detailed topographic map of the territory that would become critical in the CBI - China-Burma-India Theater - during WWII. From a historic-cartographic standpoint, the need for accurate maps in executing Allied wartime logistics cannot have been more vital. Approaches to China by land and sea had been cut off by the Japanese. As a result, the burdensome "Hump" had to be surmounted. The E. A. Wear and soiling commensurate with age, with corners rounded and occasional slight, closed tears along fore-edge of two or three plates, each less than an inch. With an errata sheet bound in. This is not a volume in Ogawa's "Illustrations of Japanese Life," a small-format series on various subjects published from 1890s-1910s, but a large folio volume in a series published with uniform covers. The publications provides a fascinating glimpse into Meiji-era Japan in which the traditional Japanese aesthetic is slightly Americanized. This is a large folio volume in an Ogawa series published with uniform covers. While other titles appear on the open market, "Chrysanthemums of Japan" is scarce; auction records indicate only one sale in the last few years, in England. The publication provides a fascinating glimpse into Meiji-era Japan in which the traditional Japanese aesthetic is slightly Americanized. That tendency is most noticed in Ogawa's captions, imbued with Victoriana.

Laid in are printed four-page brochure for the Lloyd Reynolds exhibit "A Life of Forms in Art" at the Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, 2011, as well as a one-page prospectus for the exhibition catalog. During his last year the well-known Portland author, calligrapher and teacher wrote this history of the alphabet in the form of personal letters to his friend William Gunderson. Printed by John Laursen at Press-22. Preserved in a clear archival sleeve.

Eleven full sheet letterpress broadsides on Mohawk Vellum including one title sheet and one sheet stating this is Denise Levertov's copy "L" in the lettered edition of twenty. One narrow broadside sheet. Two spoiled full sheets of Raymond Carver Three Stories on dark yellow paper. Gray buckram boards, printed paper tag mounted on the cover, heavy cream paper pouch. Several of the broadsides are illustrated, and each is individually numbered in an edition limited to 150. Pouch has a three-inch tear at the top of the inside edge, else Fine.
