Geneva: Eustache Vignon, 1580. Small octavo. [16],213 pp. In Latin. 19th-century plain paper-backed marbled boards, manuscript spine title. 19th-century German booksellers label in front pastedown. Small early inscription, crossed out in early ink, in title page, not affecting text, occasional early underlining and marginal notes. Two-inch vertical crease at head of title leaf, with half-inch closed tear at edge (tear not affecting text), faint dampstaining in first 24 leaves. Very good.

Early Latin edition, after the first edition, in German, of 1569 and the first Latin edition of 1570. Known in English as "Of Ghostes and Spirites Walking by Nyght, and of Strange Noyses, Crackes, and Sundry Forewarnings, Whiche Commonly Happen Before the Death of Menne, Great Slaughters, & Alterations of Kyngdomes," from the 1572 English translation, this book is one of the most important demonological works of the Reformation era and was profoundly influential in Elizabethan literature.

The author, Ludwig Lavater (1527-1886), was a Swiss Zwinglian minister and theologian based in Zurich. In the 16th and 17th-century Protestant world, new questions surfaced regarding the nature of ghostly apparitionsparticularly their origins. In the Catholic understanding, ghosts were generally thought to be spirits of the dead on leave from Purgatory. With their rejection of the doctrine of Purgatory, Protestant philosophers and theologians were compelled to search for new answers. One (fairly unpopular) position was taken by Reginald Scot in his DISCOURSE UPON DEVILS AND SPIRITS, appended to his 1584 work, DISCOVERIE OF WITCHCRAFT, in which he argued that because the age of miracles had ceased long ago apparitions must be no more than the products of human imagination or trickery. The dominant view in Protestant theology (if still not quite the popular mind), however, came to be what Lavater expressed here in DE SPECTRIS. Lavater argued that, while many apparitions may be indeed be products of false perception, ample evidence of real supernatural visitations had existed from biblical and classical antiquity to the present day. He concluded, however, that these phenomena are not the spirits of the dead but in fact agents of Hell (and perhaps occasionally Heaven) that will sometimes take human spiritual form. He relates examples of these phenomena throughout the work, together with a taxonomy of less-human specters such as Lamiae, Larvae, and Lemures and a variety of mythical creatures.

In his introduction to the 1929 Oxford edition of GHOSTES AND SPIRITES (edited with May Yardley), J. Dover Wilson demonstrates the clear influence of Lavater's views - and possibly of his book, directly - on Shakespeare in the shaping of the dialogues surrounding the ghost of Hamlet's father. In TAMMUZ PAN AND CHIRST : NOTES ON A TYPICAL CASE OF MYTH-TRANSFERENCE AND DEVELOPMENT (Chicago, 1912), Wilfred H. Schoff discusses the influence of Lavater's "strange compilation of wonder stories" on the Elizabethans and traces the path of the "Dead Pan" story in English literature from DE SPECTRIS through Spencer, Milton, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Description:
1863 GHOSTS 1ed Discovery Ghouls Occult Spirits George Cruikshank Caricature Art
George Cruikshank was one of the most prolific book illustrators of 19th-century England. His caricature illustrations most famously appeared in some of the works of Charles Dickens. He regularly depicted English life and satirized politics and social customs, especially slavery and abolitionist reforms. Being disturbed by the American spiritualist and séance fad going around he applied his satire to the idea of ghosts claiming that clearly it was all a hoax as ghosts always appear clothed and for that to be true clothes would have to be a part of the soul, which can only be absurd.

This 1863 first edition includes 9 black and white woodcuts of varying sizes throughout!

Description:
1887 Golden Legend of the CROSS Medieval Woodcut Illustrations Veldener Caxton

A beautiful, 1887 facsimile edition of Veldener's printing of 'Golden Legend on the Finding of the Holy Cross'. This work includes William Caxton's English translation as well as 64 impressive illustrations from Fisher fresco paintings from the Chapel of Trinity Church in Stratford England. The original 15th-century work was written by an unknown author; though, the decorative Veldener printing was much desired. The illustrations are known to be reproduced from the 1483 original edition of the 'Golden Legend'.

Notes and prefatory material of John Ashton and Baring Gould. Ashton covers the legend itself, depicting types of miracles, raising people from the dead, healing the sick, and oddly making 'black people become white'!
This 1887 edition was published by Unwin and bound in a decorative binding, in the style of 15th-century masters.

Description:
1648 1st ed Saint Cyprian Bishop of Carthage Early Christian MARTYR Papacy FOLIO

"It is a persistent evil to persecute a man who belongs to the grace of God. It is a calamity without remedy to hate the happy."
― Cyprian
Cyprian was an Early Church bishop of Carthage from the 3rd-century. Cyprian was the first to write about the primacy of the Pope as it was set out in "The Unity of The Catholic Church". Most of his writings surround pastoral ministry, addressing many of the issues with the Roman government. He also determined prayer to be "the only refuge of the Christian".
This 1648 first edition of the works of St. Cyprian was collected and edited by Nicolas Rigault.

Description:
[6], 272 pp.Second edition of the Latin translation of a work on ghosts, phantoms and apparitions of people who have passed away, written by the Swiss theologian Ludwig Lavater (1527-1586). Besides ghosts, it deals with strange sounds, voices, inexplicable events and peculiar accidents occurring after someones death. Lavater denies that souls or ghosts of the dead could appear. If someone does see these apparitions, he should be aware that they aren't the souls of the deceased, but the work of demons. "As a Protestant, Lavater rejected the idea of Purgatory... as an outdated Catholic concept. Description:
BASILEAE: APUD NIC. EPISCOPIUM IUN., 1558. In 16. Dim. 17x12 cm. Pp. 32 (n.n.)+350+2 (n.n.). Numerose note manoscritte all'interno. Marca editoriale all'ultima carta. Titolo manoscritto al taglio inferiore. Opera collazionata e risultata completa. Legatura in pergamena. Non comune. Copertina in piena pergamena con… Read More

Description:
LUGDUNI: APUD SEB. GRYPHIUM, 1548. In 16. Dim. 17x11 cm. Pp. 402+(14). Read More
