Apparent first printing of this 1910 edition with the Pape illustrations. 315 pp., colour frontis plus 11 colour plates in text, endpapers decorated with JMD monogram, oversized format in pale green linen with extravagent gilt and coloured decorations to spine and front board. A firmly bound copy with no significant flaws. Neat owner marks on ffep, modest wear to cloth at tips, spine a bit faded but titles still legible. An above-average copy for its age.. Hardcover. London: MacMillan & Co., 1890. First printing of the English edition, one of only 500 published. Complete three-volume set in a deluxe burgundy full-leather binding. Spine has five raised bands, gilt spine titles, and "1890" stamped at the base. Original marbled endpapers, aeg. A superb set with no owner's names, stamps or other markings to the contents. Hinges firm, joints undamaged, gilt edges and spine titles are very fresh and only very slightly worn, leather not worn through at extremities. Only noticeable flaws are some fading to the leather along the edges and minor wear to the tips. It's doubtful that a more attractive set is on the market. Photos can be provided.. 1st. Full-Leather. Pp. i-lv, 1-527, frontis portrait + 25 illustrations, octavo format, marbled fore-edges and endpapers, full tree calf leather binding with gilt stamped crest and gilt edge-decorations on the front board, extensive gilt decorations to the spine with five raised bands, gilt tiltes on red leather compartment. Very Good copy with modest wear to extremities, gilt very bright, binding holding well, except front external joint starting to crack a bit at the top. Presentation plate on fep to an Upper Canada College student, dated 1933. Internally Fine, with minor foxing to blank endpapers. Some "tide mark" stains to the fore-edge of the text block, not affecting text. Boards slightly bowing. A very atttractive example of this book acquired from the original owner's family. Toronto: Briggs, 1904. First printing. Pp. vii, 8-227, frontis plate of Hathaway Bay, 7 plates, octavo format in green buckram with photo paste-down, gilt rules and titles. A very attractive little book. Neat owner's name dated 1907. Cloth is lightly worn at tips with bright gilt, front paste-down is lightly worn with small chip from edge. Binding firm with original endpapers, no sign of repair. Contents clean. The frontis plate appears to have some smudged ink from the printing process affecting just the bottom 3/4" of the image. A very attractive copy of this scarce Canadiana item.. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good.

Title page states "from the twenty-third Edinburgh edition". 178 pp + (2) "Advertisement", index, pocket format (about 6" X 3.5") in pale blue paper-covered boards, dark-blue cloth spine. Binding and contents appear to be original with no sign of alteration or repair. Firm binding, clean contents. Paper-covered boards modestly worn and scuffed, backstrip intact. Really a very attractive copy overall. This edition, published by McPhail (not Brewer & McPhail) is rare, with no examples found on WorldCat.. Hardcover. Very Good.

Pp. xii, 368, frontis plate "The Pursuit", 140 illustrations, many full-pate plates, index, large octavo format in burgundy full-leather calf fine binding, with gilt rules to front and rear, spine with six compartments (five raised bands) gilt decorations, black spine label with gilt titles, marbled endpapers and page edges. A superb fine binding production. Externally Very Good with expected wear to the tips (boards exposed a bit, moreso at the lower tips), modest wear along spine-edges and spine-ends, but only slight loss. Spine titles very legible. Hinges and endpapers are in excellent condition, not cracked or loose at all. No noticeable odours to the book. The only issue that prevents a Very Good designation is scattered foxing affecting many of the pages, moreso the preliminaries and last few leaves. Some of the plates have some foxing, others none at all. A very handsome copy overall. Digital images availalbe upon request. . 1st. Full-Leather. Good. Illus. by Giacomelli .

Neat original owner's name on front free endpaper, minor foxing to contents, cover title very faded, cloth faded with some staining to the rear. Scarce guide. . 1st. Hardcover. Very Good. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall.

Small label "Bound by Blackie and Son" inside rear board. A superb copy with no owner's name, very firm original binding, minimal wear/scuffing to covers (not worn through at tips). Front free endpaper is creased. Some foxing to front and rear blank leaves. One or two spots to the title page, last few plates affected in a minor way. Photos available. . 1st. Three-Quarter Leather. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

Pp. xxiii, 619, frontis plates (Sketch of a Guest-chamber"), 131 illustrations, F appendices, index, errata, large octavo format in dark green buckram with extensive gilt decorations to the front board and spine. Contents are Good with moderate foxing to the preliminary pages up to the frontis, just minor foxing in places elsewhere, but most plates are quite fresh and clean. Buckram and gilt is quite bright overall, but the spine is slightly faded as expected. Average evidence of use to extremities, with short pull-tears to spine and tips worn through. Both inner hinges have been reinforced. A decent copy overall with the flaws mentioned.. 5th. Hardcover. Fair.

Bound in marbled boards in three-quarters leather, possibly original with no sign of restoration, gilt-ruled spine with gilt titles. Gift inscription inside, in calligraphic script, dated 1816. Contents in excellent condition with no significant wear nor foxing. Slight offsetting as expected. Binding is firm, not shaken. Covers quite worn at extremities as expected. Pp.[1] blank, title page, [8] "The Preface to the Reader", [3] "Clarissimo...", [20] "A Table of the Principal Things as are contained in these Five following discourses", 211, [2] advertising for additional titles sold by Saywell, [1} blank, size about 3 1/2" X 6", very old full-leather binding, possibly original? There are no fixed front nor rear endpapers. The front free endppaper is lacking an inch across the top and has a few small holes lower down. The title page is nicely preserved with a couple of tiny holes near the bottom obscuring 3 or 4 letters in the printing information. Overall the printed text is quite clean and very readable, with occasional spotting. Pp. 125-126 has a significant tear with old cello-tape repair, but is complete. Quite a decent copy in original un-restored condition. Only 18 copies found in WorldCat.. 1st. Full-Leather. Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

About 4 3/4" X 7" in later full tan calf with blind-stamped decorations, "1670" in gilt on spine. Firmly bound in the newer binding with renewed endpapers. Leaves browned at edges, particularly the title page and early part of the text block. Minor loss to the edges of the title page, not affecting the printed text. A few minor soil spots to the text, no significant tears. A very presentable copy of a rare early medical book. 6 copies of this edition found on WorldCat.. Full-Leather. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Paris: Hachette, 1911. Apparent first printing of the revised and corrected edition. Same pagination, maps, ills. etc. as the original edition. Pp. 54, LXXXV, 520, 27 maps (many colored and double-page, large folding map in rear pocket), 56 plans, 30 illustrations, 1 tableau, 12mo format in original blue buckram with gilt titles. Good firm copy, no repairs to cloth binding which shows average wear to extremities. Cloth and gilt bright with no soiling, stains or excessive staining. Some owner's marks, creases and edge-tears to contents, as expected for a travel guide. A previous owner has added an attractive colour sketch of a Greek customs official in uniform on the rear endpaper, in attractive ink and pastel. The original large folding map of Greece is missing from the rear pocket, as is often the case. But a Hachette map of Athens is present in the pocket.. 1st. Half-Leather. Good.

Pp. xii, 603, large folding map laid in between p. xii and p. 1, decorated endpapers, octavo format in three-quarters brown calf over red textured buckram boards, spine has five raised bands, with title in second compartment in gilt on black field, ornate stamped gilt in other compartments, blindstamped rules on quarter leather front and back. Label from 19th century bookseller on fep "S & T Gilbert Booksellers 4 Copthall Buildings, London EC." Small, neat 19th century bookplate "Donald Simon Fraser" on fep. A Very Good copy with firm binding, no significant flaws. No significant foxing to leaves, just some offsetting to the margin of p. 1 from the laid-in map. The leather tips are worn through a bit, as expected, with a bit of the boards showing at some of the tips. Very minor wear to the head of the spine, but no significant loss. Map is in superb condition, not worn through at folds at all. It does not appear to have been opened much, if at all. Just some minor soiling to the back from handling while folded. About as nice a copy as one could hope to find. Photos available. . 1st. Half-Leather. Very Good.

Boards worn to edges, leather is bright and unworn, contents not overly worn, etc. A bit of foxing to preliminary leaves and last few in book. An attractive, very well-preserved copy.. Half-Leather. Very Good.


Grece: Les Guides Bleu

Pp. 54, LXXXV, 520, 27 maps (many colored and double-page, large folding map in rear pocket), 56 plans, 30 illustrations, 1 tableau, 12mo format in custom half-leather binding with gilt titles on front board and spine, dark-blue buckram boards. This copy belonged to the former Canadian Government Trade Commissioner, with his signature dated 1930 on the first blank page. Some other documents of his are in the rear pocket. The book has held up very well, with binding still firm, cloth and gilt bright, contents not overly worn. The cloth is worn through at the tips and lower edges of the boards, the large fragile folding map in the rear pocket is complete but in two pieces with tears are the creases. An interesting association copy. . 1st. Half-Leather. Very Good.
