By SAM PATCH - DAREDEVIL PERFORMER'S VERSE HISTORY)

New York.: McLoughlin Brothers.. No date. Ca. 1870.. 24 page illustrated children’s book recounting the death-defying stunts of Sam Patch (1799-1829) progressing from infancy to his untimely demise in a final "Wonderful Leap." Color pictorial card wrappers, 24 pp. total, thirteen color lithographed pages which are blank on verso save for front and rear covers, 10 ½ x 9 ¼ inches. 2 ¼ inch separation at bottom of spine; ½ inch separation at top of spine; 1 inch tear (repaired) to front cover; very small paper loss to top free-edge corner of front cover; small adhered paper loss to one page. Overall very good clean condition. Perversely listed by the publisher under the heading "Picture Books for Little Children." An engaging verse rendition of the life of Sam Patch, who was born in Rhode Island in 1799 and died in 1829 attempting a jump from the Genesee River High Falls in Rochester, New York. Patch was an impoverished youth who made his first public jump over the Passaic Falls, Patterson New Jersey, at the age of 20. His career was structured around death-defying jumps from bridges, buildings, ship riggings and waterfalls, events that would attract huge crowds. The "Wonderful Leaps" chronicles his life, in verse, from infancy to his death at Genesee Falls. "He jumps! He sinks! The waters roar / Above him, and he’s seen no more; / And as their breath the people catch, / They sigh, ‘Alas! brave, foolish Patch.’" End of story. .
