An impressive map with pictographs showing the resources of the countries of North and Central America: the legend includes agriculture, manufacturing, lumbering, education, brick making, coffee and more. There are two insets at lower left, of Alaska and an "Enlarged section of Chicago and Vicinity." This was issued by the magazine the Southern Agriculturist "First in the Farm homes of the South" as a part of a large wall hanging display. The map is unsigned but very much in the style of the maps by Arthur Edward Elias published in the same year in the "Dominion of Canada Animated Atlas." .

Little (1/8 inch) paper loss at lower left edge of upper map (at intersection of two folds), chip into lower border of opened pamphlet. Good condition; maps would display very well. This vintage pamphlet features a bird's eye view map of Los Angeles County with Long Beach centrally located at the lower edge and another map of the City of Long Beach California, each designed by Mary Hall Atwood and bordered with numerous vignette illustrations of points of interest. The verso contains information on how to "Make Long Beach Your Vacation Headquarters". An uncommon pamphlet which WorldCat lists only at Stanford. We have not seen Atwood's map of Long Beach published in other formats. .

A decorative, fascinating piece of Southern California history, this 1954 map celebrates Los Angeles' developing freeway system, color coded to show "completed or under construction" "budgeted" and "future construction." Compiled from an impeccable source ("Basic cartographic data supplied by State of California, Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, District VII. 4-1-54.") the map is enlivened with brightly colored pictographs of points of interest along the freeways such as the Farmer's Market, UCLA campus, and the headquarters of the map publishers, Pacific Press. The Los Angeles Allied Printing Trades Council is also listed as publisher - a reminder of an era when trade union influence was at its peak in the U.S.; this is reflected in the cartouche at lower left showing a clean cut man in overalls with tools of trade standing against a background of skyscrapers and factories. On the right is a woman positioned next to the Allied Printing Union label. We have been unable to locate a copy of this in OCLC/WorldCat. .

Published to encourage tourism by the Sunshine Area Chambers of Commerce, text in the decorative cartouche explains: "The Map of America's Sunshine Area can indicate only a few of the numberless scenic and historic attractions contributing to the magnificence, the awe-inspiring beauty and the romance of this unique, hospitable, and sincerely friendly land." Air routes and airfields are marked in blue. The verso has black and white photo illustrations of places of interest and an extensive listing of facilities at southwestern airports in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, including the length of the runway. The striking two panel color cover illustration, also by B.E. Lewis, depicts a small propeller airplane (NC12) taking off with cowboy and girl couple with horse in the foreground. An uncommon item, not located in WorldCat. .

Spokane, WA.: Lindgren Brothers.. 1948.. Color pictorial / pictographic map, sheet 22 X 16 3/4 inches; originally published folded, now archivally mounted on linen. In 1932 the Lindgren Brothers of Spokane, Washington began manufacturing colorful silk-screened maps depicting iconic national parks and other scenic areas. With emphasis on both verbal and visual humor, they titled these inexpensive tourist souvenirs "Hysterical Maps," seeking to distinguish them from "historical" pictorial maps, a genre then in vogue. Aimed at the middle-class American tourist, they were available for purchase at gas stations and other stops along the vacation route. No library holdings listed on OCLC/WorldCat. .

Archivally repaired separation at right horizontal fold, overall very good condition, with original mailing envelope (lacking flap, otherwise in very good condition. This amusing and informative bird's eye view style street map extolls the virtues of Pasadena, California. The artist and Pasadena resident Howard Wookey writes in the text block at lower left: "This cartograph of Pasadena is affectionately dedicated to those fortunate souls who abide within its boundaries and to those many persons on the outside looking in with longing hearts... For who has seen Pasadena and felt the lure of it's (sic) balmy fragrance, the tang of it's scientific achievements, the natural beauty of it's setting, the warmth of it's peace loving citizenry, that has not wished he too could live there? And to those on the outside - we send this message, "Keep Hoping - Keep Smiling - Keep trying" - and Someday, perhaps, we will meet in the Crown City, The Gala City of the New Year, 'E Afortunado Anno Nuevo." The route of the Rose Parade is marked in red. Places of interest are pictured and named and events from Pasadena' history are portrayed in cartoon style. The pictorial border of vignette illustrations depicts places, people and events of interest. OCLC/WorldCat lists a single library holding at the University of California, Los Angeles. .

This is a brightly colored and highly decorative bird's eye view style map looking north east from the Pacific Ocean at the Mexico - California border. Contemporary sites are marked, including a white skyscraper marking Los Angeles and activities such as surfing at La Jolla and golfing on Santa Catalina are denoted with little figures. Vignettes decorate the border. Color map "Roads to Romance Road Map", color photo illustrations and information on the tourist sites on verso of map. .

Map includes inset map of Boston area. The maps are bordered by numerous illustrations by Ernest Dudley Chase and depict historical points of interest, churches, sports, bridges, boating, monuments, schools and historic facts such as "Bell Invented Telephone Here", "Here Hawthorne wrote House of Seven Gables", etc. Text on verso includes listing of covered bridges, mileage table, chart of recreation areas, photo illustrations and descriptions of points of interest. This 1961 version (with the Boston insert) was issued in a shorter press run than later print runs; the Boston version is less common than the version issued in 1965 with inset of the New York World's Fair rather than Boston. .

Los Angeles.: The Great Circle Tour Association.. No date. [ 1934].. Booklet, paper wrappers, 4 x 9 3/4 inches opening to sheets 9 1/2 x 8 inches, 23 numbered sheets. Double page full color centrefold pictorial map, black and white photo images throughout. Pictorial map in very good condition with three vertical folds as issued; 1/2 by 1 inch paper loss to upper corner of back cover; repaired tear to upper front cover, with general wear and creasing to covers; interior in good condition with a couple of short tears. An uncommon publication apparently produced for the California-Pacific International Exposition in 1935 by The Great Circle Tour Association "composed of a group of Chambers of Commerce, hotels and resorts located in the six great counties of Southern California..." Individual pages list a motor tour ("Los Angeles to Palm Springs Via San Bernadino", "Los Angeles to San Diego (Coast Route)" etc.) with mileage, places to see, hotels and restaurants. The attractive centrefold pictorial map by W.T. Calkins (copyright 1934) marks routes and some of the scenic highlights. There is a color advertisement for the Panama Pacific Line on the back cover and an advertisement for Young's Market Company on the rear cover. The David Rumsey Collection includes another map by Calkins, but we have found no record of this booklet listed in WorldCat. .

An interesting postcard from Petley Studios who published maps by such as Don Bloodgood. No illustrator on this one, but California takes up half of the U.S. Comic jibes such as "Wet Wash" for Washington and "All-Gone" for Oregon. .
