This is a later Reprint Edition, published, we believe, during the mid-1960s, although the copyright page provides the only the date the copyright was renewed, in 1937. Zane Grey was the one who created the modern western novel. He often employed familiar plot devices in many of his books. In West of the Pecos he uses the girl-pretending-to-be-a-boy trope to protect the innocent young girl from being treated harshly by the other drovers. Terrill Lambeth is now an orphan, her father having died, and her adventures are the basis of this story. The fact she can ride and shoot doesn't hurt, but before long, Pecos Smith, the hard riding, fast shooting "man" of the bunch discovers he is a she. And you can probably already imagine the scenarios that follow. This is a "traditional" western, the kind one associates with Zane Grey; it has the broad use of language and the vivid descriptions of the locale he is known for. It is a book well worth reading, and more than once. And these G&D editions are sturdy enough to take successive readings.

The Covered Wagon.

By Emerson Hough.

New York, NY D. Appleton and Company, 1923. Hardcover Reprint Edition [1923]. Very Good+: shows very light wear to extremities; slight spine lean; faint tanning to text pages; faint, sparse foxing at outside edges. Binding secure; text clean. Despite noted flaws, remains clean, sturdy, and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 379pp. Endpaper Maps; Frontispiece illustration. Reprint Edition [1923]. Hardback: Lacks DJ. I read and enjoyed this story as a boy. And I can say now it's still enjoyable, despite a few quirks of dialogue and other usages we now consider old-fashioned. Hough knew the people and land whereof he wrote, having living the pioneer life himself in New Mexico and as an avid outdoorsman throughout the west. Set in the late 1840s just before the California gold rush (which actually plays a vital role in the plot), the book tells of two wagon caravans bound for Oregon and the conflict which divides them because of a love triangle. Indian fights, buffalo hunts, dangerous river crossings and other dangers of the trail add to a gripping and entertaining read.
