Boston Free Press, No. 5 (1968)

By Kelly, Brian, Chris Venn, Rowland Koefeld, et al. (eds.)

Boston: Boston Free Press, 1968. Newspaper. 12p., folded tabloid, illus., evenly toned, a bit of chipping where spine and quarterfold meet, else very good. A short-lived underground paper especially concerned with resistance to the draft and the Vietnam War. While this issue is undated, internal evidence seems to indicate that it was published in summer 1968, notwithstanding a statement inside that a certain article was "reprinted from the Boston Free Press of Dec. 1969", which appears to be a satirical account of a projected future event. Much of the issue is devoted to the end of the trial of the Boston Five (Spock, Sloane Coffin, Ferber, Goodman, and Raskin) for conspiracy. Also: transcription of a May 23rd speech by Herbert Marcuse about the May revolt in France, and an interview with actress Sally Dennison about the Antonioni film "Zabriskie Point," then still in casting.

By Kagel, Sam [and] John Kagel

Berkeley: unpublished by the ASUC Store / Ed Kirwin Graphic Arts, 1965. Mammoth set reproduced from neatly typewritten mss. We are assuming it is complete in these two volumes: standard leaves with dense text and narrow margins (perfectly legible), side-stitched with enormous staples under professionally-printed cardstock cover sheets. The unprinted lower sheet of v.1 is detached with little tears; both covers of v.2 are irregularly sunned and dust-dappled. Other than these blemishes, the set of two is in very good shape, no ownerships, no markings. Sam Kagel was a notable negotiator in his day, left a reputation and (at San Francisco's Labor Archives & Research Center, SF State) a body of papers.

Nairobi: Heinemann [Heinemann Educational Books (EAst Africa) Ltd], 1975. Paperback. [256]p., squareback 8.5 x 5.5 inch coated pictorial wraps, mildly rubbed & edgeworn. Laid in is a printed bookmark from Prestige booksellers in Nairobi, has elephant logo. Photosection is unique to this edition, having been taken from "Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, a photobiography" by Peter Moll, published by Transafrica in 1973. Copyright page states, "reprinted 5 times / this edition printed in Kenya 1975." Thus the volume is physically an African production, having been published by Heinemann's Nairobi office, printed (and presumably bound) by Kenya Litho Ltd., also Nairobi. The work on the plates seems perfect (of course, these may have been obtained directly from Transafrica) but the typeface has the faint blur of photocopy.
